Putnam AVID
September-October 2021
National Principals Month
Thank you!
October is National Principals Month and we would like to take this time to recognize the great administrators we have at our AVID schools: James Stout, Rodney Symonds, Tiffany Scranton, Michael Chaires, Lamar Purifoy, Bryan Helms, Joy Eubanks, Maeghan Morris, Stephanie Reed, JD Thompson, Joe Theobold, Tammie Thornton, Tim Adams, Tina Gilyard, Michelle Tucker, Aaron Gieselman, and Belinda Taylor! Thank you so much for your dedication to your schools, our students, and AVID. You guys are amazing!!
What do your walls say to students?
Here are some "walls" around the district. I love what these walls have to say to our students!
Good Idea!
Leigh Anne Lands spotlights one of her AVID students every couple of weeks on a bulletin board in her room. This is a great way to build relational capacity with students.
Congratulations QIR!
QIR has had a spot on the high school list for a couple of years, but this year, when middle school was added--they made that list too! Go QIR!!!
AVID at Palatka Junior Senior High School
Leigh Anne Lands got into the spooky season with a Haunted College Activity. Her students read stories about about haunted campuses and had to create a "tombstone" to share the information about the college they read about. They turned out spooktacular!!
Do you know what a CRINGLE is?
Leigh Anne Lands's AVID students do, check this out!
Mr. McRee at PJSHS has a chat wall: What is the first detail you notice about someone and what does it tell you about them? He used this during his unit on "details."
AVID at QI Roberts Jr. Sr. High School
QIR got in the spirit of the season as well, look at Ms. Lamb's door!
It was Spirit Week at QIR, but Ms. Lamb made sure students applied this to AVID with a college pumpkin project. Students had 3 options for the project--a pumpkin, a presentation poster, or an essay. Students had to present their project to the class. By the way, her AVID kids won the "Most Creative" door award! Please, help her kids get into college!!
Spread Positive Vibes
As a #funfriday and Framework Friday activity, Ms. Lamb had her 7th grade AVID students spread "positive vibes" all around the school. Her students wanted to help get QIR students through that final week of the first grading period when so many students are so stressed out! What a great idea!
"Be stress free." --AVID
"Don't give up, you're at QI for a reason!"--AVID
"You are perfect, don't let anyone tell you different."--Peyton
My favorite, lol:
"Either you run the day or the day runs you!"
QIR Site team talks about where they are at with their Site Goals and what their next steps are. Below, for the Inservice Day on October 21, Ms. Lamb and I did a short workshop on Focused Note Taking--one of the Site Team's schoolwide focus goals. We had a great time sharing note-taking success already happening at QIR and what teachers can do to ensure the processing of those notes is an expectation with students.
AVID AT Crescent City Jr. Sr. High School
Pennants that get to the heart of the matter!
Nathan Collins had his AVID students create pennants with their #lifegoals included. I love them and they look great on his walls. By the way, they are also a great reminder for his students to keep the focus and stay on the path toward their dreams.
Delaney has it going on!
Rose Delaney had her 7th grade language arts students are deconstructing a text to get to the central idea. They used a Frayer Model graphic organizer, AVID note template, and an essential question or focus question to figure it out. By the way, if you ever have a chance to visit her classroom--it is adorable!
Robert Ripley engages his students in a debate. When you are in his classroom, it is obvious his kids love his enthusiasm and excitement for AVID! I also checked out one of his student's binders while I was there. Nice work!
AVID at Interlachen Jr. Sr. High School
Know your WHY!
Maddie Kennedy asked her Sr. High AVID students why they want to be in AVID. She included their responses on this bulletin board so they would never lose site of their "why." Love it!
Maddie Kennedy's AVID class doing a little Philosophical Chairs--the SPEED way! My favorite "speed" topic that day: Pineapple belongs on pizza! One student had to make a statement. Then students choose to "Agree" or "Disagree" (one side of the room is agree and one side of the room is disagree). Then the two sides debate why they are correct! The kids had a great time and it was fun to watch this spirited debate.

Students must be in a college readiness program like AVID to apply. As an extra incentive, AVID 4 classes can enter a competition for $500 if at least 50% of the students in AVID 4 apply. Also, 50% of the male population in the AVID class must apply. Below is a link to the Dell Scholar application and the competition form (the AVID teacher must complete the competition form).
