Celebrations & Appreciations
Thanks to all!
In grade level planning (GLIP) and PLCs, teams are hitting the ground running.
In third grade during grade level planning, teachers were looking at student work together (the opening task from the purple books). From this they were able to see that students have some understanding of multiplication through memorization of facts, but didn't have all the conceptual underpinings they know will help students grow strong in the more complex math concepts to come. They are adjusting the math unit to reflect the students needs.
MINDS (Teaching & Learning)
Professional Development this Week
Agenda:
- We will continue our work of thinking about our instruction and classroom culture through the lens of race
-We will begin planning our Year Long Maps with Ms. Fowlkes and Ms. Plambeck as leads for this work
F & P Assessments
Who do you Need to Assess?
Teachers should assess:1) All new students
2) All students below or approaching grade level standard on F & P
3) Any one you feel you need an updated score for.
Ms. Yve is making her LLI groups. She will share the existing lists with you. If anyone is missing, please let her know ASAP so that we include those students in her group planning. LLI will start 9/11/18.
What about the students at or above grade level?
F & P scores will be due on 9/29 in to Illuminate. You can use Spring scores for any student who you are confident is safely at or above grade level. We will re-assess these student before first report cards. If you are uncertain about a student. We do not want to find out too late to include someone in LLI for the Fall.
While you are assessing, what are your other students are doing? Reader's Workshop!
Even when you are doing F & P assessments, you can set up your students with a clear Teaching Point, a mid-workshop check in, and a post-workshop discussion.
Students should not be having free time, hanging out, or playing while you are assessing.
Here's the first 20 days....these are all great teaching points to be using with students these first few weeks.

HEARTS (School Climate & Community)
Super Easy Community Builders- and ways to get all students engaging....
Here's a few quick ice breakers that aren't annoying and involve movement and help students get to know each other:
https://www.cultofpedagogy.com/classroom-icebreakers/
These can also be adapted to content topics as you get going with your instruction. Once the students know the routine it's easy to turn a get to know you activity, into a more rigorous questioning strategy that gets ALL students talking, not just the ones who raise their hands.
Peace Corner/Quiet Space- Trauma Informed Practice
All teachers should watch this very short video:
You can check out Ms. Walton's and Ms. Fowlkes' (and many other teachers!) peace corner at Glenview.
By providing a place in the classroom for all students to take a break (with a timer and a reflection sheet (these can be found in the Toolbox Handbook that all teachers should have).....then you have more time to teach AND you are helping your students learn to manage their own feelings and get back to learning.
The teacher in the blog below reflects on how her peace corner has become a restorative justice shift for her, rather than sending kids out of the classroom or even to a buddy room, she has set up a space for students to re-group in the room so learning can continue (and so they LEARN how to manage their feelings).

RJ Office Guidelines:
Bathroom: All are welcome into my office if the door is open. For confidentiality reasons though, if the RJ door is shut, please knock and wait a minute before entering to use the bathroom. If the door is locked during the day, please use another bathroom.
Students: My office is open during morning recess (Tuesday-Friday) and Friday lunch recess for all students. Please let students know about morning recess and Friday Drop-ins. These are great time slots to redirect students who are looking for community, want to talk out an issue, or who want an alternative to the playgroun.
Need to refer a student? Please email me, stop by my office, or drop me a written request in the green box outside my door.
Thanks!

Keys?
I apologize for the delay, I know it's inconvenient to not have the keys you need to get around the facility and I assure you I'm working on it, but getting the keys made out side of the district is proving to be complicated and getting them made inside the district seems to be costing more than it should.
I appreciate your patience. If I cannot get it resolved soon, I will have to go the more expensive route, but I would like to try a bit longer to save us this money.
An Extra Prep?
If you have an extra prep, you will need to provide something for Ms. Regalado or Ms. Lewis to do with your students. Please check in with them in advance. If Coach Jose is covering your class, he can take students out for extra PE, but Ms. Lewis and Ms. Regalado are already planning their classes by the week. You can communicate if there is a need you have (students need to finish up an assignment using technology or can use the art room to finish up a project they started in class, for example).
Classroom teachers should communicate and collaborate directly with their prep. colleague to determine how to best spend the time that the prep teacher is covering when it's an extra prep., but do not assume they will provide an extra class without direction from you.
Required Online Mandated Reporter Training for ALL OUSD Employees- FAQ
What and who are Mandated Reporters?
A Mandated Reporter is anyone who is obligated by virtue of their professional role to promptly report suspected child abuse to the appropriate law enforcement or social services agency.
Please be aware that failure to complete the training can be cause for discipline up to and including suspension or termination from employment.
Under California law, every employee of a school district is a mandated reporter and must receive training in understanding and fulfilling their obligations to report suspected child abuse within the first six weeks of the school year - for the 17-18 school year, this means training must be completed by October 9, 2017.
How does OUSD deliver Mandated Reporter Training?
OUSD is providing a standardized online training to all staff through its partnership with Keenan SafeSchools. It is self-guided and each employee is responsible for taking the entire training independently. Instructions for getting to the training follow below.
How long does the online training take to complete?
The training takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. The district will receive automatic notice when you have completed your training, and you may also print a certificate of completion for your own records.
For more information and the link to the online training click here:
https://www.ousd.org/Page/15319Staff Absences
The district encourages teachers and staff to make non-urgent appointments before school or after school to ensure you are maximizing on the instructional day, not utilizing your personal leave, and not impacting the sub pool which is limited and prioritized for employees who are sick.
Please call your substitute request in as early as possible to the system. Fridays and Mondays are the most impacted and if your class does not get a substitute, your students will be divided among your colleague's classrooms or we will cancel preps and assign one of our prep teachers to your classroom. This has an impact on the entire school.
