LSES Weekly Update
Week of February 1-5
Principal's Message
Dear families,
We have been experiencing technical difficulties with email addresses and had to stop emailing the weekly newsletter. Please contact our office if you are receiving this newsletter, but do not have any students at Lincoln Street so we can update our system.
We also want to inform you that we have started our second semester. The report cards will be sent home on Thursday, February 4th.
Have a wonderful week,
Carmen Brodniak
Lincoln Street Principal
KinderKonzerts
We are fortunate to host Oregon Symphony Concerts right here at Lincoln Street Elementary School! On Wednesday, January 13 we hosted some members of the brass family. Kinderkonzerts are concerts of small ensembles of professional musicians from the Oregon Symphony introducing the orchestra to K-2nd Grade students. Parents and younger siblings of our K-2 students are also invited to attend these concerts for free. The Oregon Symphony performs the same show in our gym three times on concert day. Student guests from other schools attend the earlier morning performances. About 4,000 students from 30 schools attended the Lincoln Street Performances last year!
Here is a video on their website including some footage shot in our gym!
Good attendance will help your children do well in school. Your children can suffer academically if they miss 10 percent of the school year or about 18 days. That can be just one day every two weeks, and that can happen before you know it. Some absences are unavoidable. We understand that children will get sick and need to stay home occasionally. The important thing is to get your children to school as often as possible. Sporadic absences, not just those on consecutive days of school, matter. Before you know it – just one or two days a month can add up to nearly 10 percent of the school year. If too many absences occur, it is still a problem whether they are excused or unexcused because they represent too much lost learning time in the classroom.

Emotional Intelligence and Academic Performance
Emotional Intelligence (EI or EQ) is a term popularized by Daniel Goleman which refers to skills in the areas of self-awareness, self-regulation, social skills, empathy, and motivation. Goleman describes how these competencies are strongly related to academic performance, leadership success and job performance in his book, “Emotional Intelligence, Goleman, Why it can matter more than IQ.” Students attend school to attain a level of academic achievement, but they also need to learn interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. It is important that we all work together to teach our students at Lincoln Street (our future leaders) the following:
- Self-awareness – the ability to know one's emotions, strengths, weaknesses, drives, values and goals and recognize their impact on others while using ‘gut feelings’ to guide decisions.
- Self-regulation – involves controlling or redirecting one's disruptive emotions and impulses and adapting to changing circumstances.
- Social skill – managing relationships.
- Empathy - considering other people's feelings especially when making decision.
- Motivation – to make an effort or attain a goal such as academic achievement.
