Social/Emotional Wellness
And now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good.
– John Steinbeck
I read an educational blog this weekend and it focused on just what I wanted to share this week. Social/Emotional Wellness continues to be a focus area. While we have focused mostly on supporting this for our students, we also need to remember that our social and emotional well-being needs to be a focus too.
As educators, we take on numerous roles daily including emotional and physical support for our students. In doing so, we have to remember —we cannot keep giving out without taking care of ourselves. We have a great deal to offer to the students put in our care. Our daily decisions directly impact the course of many students' lives. But we also need to understand that we cannot contribute our gifts, our talents, our compassion, our creativity, our support if we are running on empty.
Taking care of yourself is not just about mental health days or school breaks. If you are burnt out, an extra day here or there isn’t going to make much of a difference. We all have to find a balance between caring for others and caring for ourselves. There are times when one is more of a focus than the other, but it cannot be that way always. In order to fully invest in others, we also have to take care of ourselves physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually.
As we head into the holiday season, find ways to take care of yourself, so you can love, support, care for, and celebrate with others. You are worth it!
