The Start of World War 1
World War 1 also known as "The Great War" because of how many casualties there were, started in 1914 and ended in 1918. World War 1 was the biggest and deadliest war of its time. The cause of World War 1 was that Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo Serbia by a member of the Black Hand gang named Gavrilo Princip. Austria Hungary blamed the Serbian Government for the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, so Austria Hungary went to war with Serbia, and because of Austria Hungary's alliance with Germany, Germany went to war also, then Germany invaded Belgium even though Belgium was neutral, so Britan and Russia went to war with Germany.
The End of The Great War
America joined World War 1 because the British ship the Lusitania was sunk by the Germans using U-boats killing around 100 American citizens. After that it took the Americans about a year to join. The central powers which were Germany, Austria Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire and the Allied powers which were Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and The United States were creating new weapons every. Many new kinds of weapons were invented during World War 1 including poison gas, machine guns, and tanks. The first tank called "little Willie" broke down in the middle of battle but was still very successful. The treaty in World War 1 started on May 3rd, 1918 but the fighting ended on November 11th at 11:00 am. The Allied Powers had conditions for Germany like they had to pay for all of the war damages they had caused. World War 1 cost America about $30 billion, and almost 15 million people died
