Week 5

Progress Reports

I will be sending home progress reports on Wednesday, September 9th. Students who have less than a 75% are in danger of failing and will need to return the report signed the following day. I will accept late/missing assignments, but there will be a point deduction. AR tests are the only things that can be completed late without a point deduction. If you feel I have made an error, please contact me and I will do my best to resolve it.

Infinite Campus / Parent Portal

Do you log in to Infinite Campus to check your child's grade? If not, please bring your ID to our front office to get access! Once you log in on a computer for the first time, you can download the app on your phone. It will even send you notifications when a grade is keyed, if you want! The district code you will need is: VVXJFH . Students can even get their own log-in and keep track of their own grades!

Word Wall

This week, students completed their first Word Wall tile! It includes one of our four mastered vocabulary words, the definition, and an example. The best of the best made it onto the bulletin board for all to see!

Open House

It was very nice meeting so many of you at our first open house last night! Thanks for coming out!

Lockers!

Students finally received lockers this week! Many are having trouble opening them--something that could really help those struggling is to purchase an inexpensive combination lock for them to practice with at home. Students will be held accountable for making it to class on time beginning next week. Students will also not be allowed to carry backpacks (other than before homeroom and after 5th period) during the school day.

Adjectives and Interjections

This week, students got a refresher course in adjectives and interjections and learned how to use them to improve their writing.

Essay Due Friday, 9/11

Students have less than one week left to complete their 1-3 page non-fiction narrative (in the same style as the Chicken Soup stories) about a time in their lives that changed them or had a big impact on them. The final draft of the essay can be typed/printed (at home) or in a student's best handwriting. The final draft is due Friday, 9/11.

Accelerated Reader

Students should be reading 2 hours per week at home.

They will appear in the grade book soon. If your child has fallen behind, please encourage them finish the book they are reading so that they can take an AR test ASAP.

The number of points due varies month to month:

August: 4 points PAST DUE

September: 7 points DUE 9/25

October: 8 points

November: 8 points

December: 3 points (due December 15)

Students can get ahead (if a student earns 10 points in August, I will apply 6 of those points to September). AR points are due by the last Friday of the month (or December 15th due to the break). If a student gets behind, they can make up points the following month. Points can not be made up for first semester after December 15th, but points over 30 will be rolled over to 2nd semester. AR tests can only be taken at school, and I will happily give students time in class to take the tests.

AR points account for 10% of a student's overall ELA grade.

Check Your Child's AR Progress!

I will update AR points in the grade book at least once a month, but you can monitor it in real time on the AR Website. Click on I'm a Parent, then click "request parent/guardian access." Please note that Sutton is called "Willis A Sutton Middle School" on this site. Let me know if you run into problems!

Coming Soon...

Monday is Labor Day (no school). Next week, students will return to the library to learn some research skills and turn in their first essay (due 9/11).
