Bus Driver STAR Award: Janie

Big picture

CONGRATULATIONS to Janie, our bus driver for Bus #57! Janie was presented a STAR Award from Dr. Cowherd, Park Hill Superintendent. Janie was nominated for this recognition from a parent. This parent shared that one day her son forgot his new glasses on the bus. After driving a middle school route, Janie drove to the English Landing Bike Night to see if she could track down the student and his family to give them his glasses. They weren't there so she drove to the student's AM/PM bus stop to see if she could figure out which house they lived in so she could return the glasses directly to the student. She did find them and the glasses were safely returned!

AVID Strategy: Essential Question

An important strategy related to being involved in the Elementary AVID program is teaching our students to take notes. Often students aren't taught this skill, but instead are taught how to copy notes/thoughts from a teacher. An AVID strategy is to always start the note taking process with sharing and having students copy what is called an Essential Question. This helps students (teachers too) narrow the focus for the learning focus.

This year, English Landing students have been working on taking two column and three column notes.

Here are a few snap shots of this learning process from fourth grade taken earlier this week.

Have you signed up for a Career Share Visit?

Big picture

Mrs. Haley Stone with WERQ fitness joined her oldest daughter's classroom on Tuesday for a career share classroom visit. She spoke to the students about the importance of health and exercise and lead them in a mini-class similar to the adult classes she creates and instructs! Our Eagles actually experienced a few dances from one of her adult classes. Eagles always SOAR!

Career Share: Schedule a Classroom Visit!

Big picture

Parental involvement in your child’s classroom is one of the leading factors in raising self-esteem and academic achievement. This can go beyond attendance at Parent and Teacher Conferences or attending family nights at English Landing. We want to see you at a Career Share Classroom Visit!

Each of our English Landing families are unique ---with their own talents. Career Share is an opportunity for every child at English Landing to showcase THEIR family to their classmates. Career Share is an amazing opportunity for you to visit our classroom. Your involvement will not only make their day, but provide another opportunity for you to partner with English Landing and your child’s education.

Our goal is to have EVERY student have a member(s) of their family come share in our classroom about their job and careers. It truly means the world to our Eagles.

Please reach out to your child's classroom teacher to set up a time for a Career Share Classroom Visit.

Celebrating Birthdays at English Landing!

Big picture

Celebrating Student Birthdays: (Park Hill Parent/Student Handbook pages 37-38):

We are happy to celebrate student birthdays and half birthdays (if your child has a summer birthday) at English Landing! To protect the health and safety of our students, families may bring pre-packaged treats to school to share with classmates. In order to address any known allergy concerns, a label listing ingredients should be affixed to the package. Due to allergies and other food intolerances, please consult with your classroom teacher before the pre-packaged treats are brought to school. As a healthier alternative, Park Hill Food Service offers a variety of nutritious treats that may be purchased.

At English Landing we need your HELP! Many birthday treats arrive at the beginning of the school day which provides us time to review the class list regarding food allergies or food intolerances, however, many other birthday treats arrive during lunch and often right at the same time the treat needs to be distributed to students. PLEASE plan on arriving earlier for lunch (at least 15 minutes) to give us time to check the pre-packaged treat ingredients with the students in the classroom who have food allergies or food intolerances. Our school nurse, Mrs. Kimbrel, and office staff, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Wood, or Mrs. Scott, will help with this process so when the lunchroom staff teachers distribute the treat in the cafeteria, additional steps have been taken to ensure we are protecting the health and safety of our eagles.
