Avengers: Age of Degan--No Excuses!

This week will mark the end of our first six weeks of school! Incredible to believe that we are already this far into the year! If we were in a 6 week grading system, we would be getting ready for report cards! WOW! With that in mind, please make sure you are keeping up with grades and that as we close our 2nd progress report period grades they are reflecting student knowledge of the standards we teach, that you are making contact with parents to address concerns so that they know we want a partnership in their child's success.

We have started our 2nd round of PLCs. I am very excited about the element of discussing our students, their "resources" and using our Ruby Payne book to come up with strategies for students where we are not seeing growth. I think this helps us feel empowered rather than hopeless regarding struggling students. We were able to come up with lots of reasonable things to try with students as we discussed our 5th graders this past week! I am putting a link below with some reminders about what we learned from Ruby Payne this summer. Included is a quick and easy inventory on "resources" which I think may help make understanding resources more tangible as we are discussing interventions for our students.

I am also really excited about our data wall. I would like to give a huge shout out to Tanja Gamill for helping a vision come to fruition. I think we have an easy to manage system that maintains confidentiality. She has worked hard to frontload information to take a large part of the creation of the cards off teacher plates so that you can focus on the data updates. I think seeing our students visually will help us celebrate their progress and help us realize those who need more specific intervention. As I looked at the cards for 5th and Kinder on Friday, it was an excititng feeling to see where students are starting. Please keep in mind that this is a learning experience. It won't be a perfect process the first time through. We will figure some things out by trial and error. Your feedback is criticial to improve the system as we go. Being aware of what "is" is the first step in knowing what may need to be addressed. Hopefully this will create a system that makes awareness easier for us all.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you do for our students! I have seen so many of you thinking outside the box to reach our students and understand their needs to build a bridge for them to experience success. When I say you are the best, it just doesn't encompass the extent of what that means, but you are greatness. Greatness for kids, greatness for our families, greatness for making an impact on public education. Please know that there is not a day that goes by that I don't recognize how blessed I am to work with such outstanding people.

Much love,

The video below is a great refresher for the activity we did with Elia about making choices about resources and what some of our families face.

PTA Meeting/5th Grade Performance

We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to be educated in a way that prepares them for college. When schools exhibit a culture of universal achievement by believing in students, they collaborate around that belief. During collaboration, they align their standards as a team. As teams align standards, they need to assess the standards and manage the data. Then, and only then, can they pursue meaningful interventions with their students.
