Weekly Wrap

In reading, we are going to continue working on attacking difficult words. We will go over several strategies for figuring out difficult words while reading. Towards the end of the week, we will begin to learn and discuss why authors choose certain words, phrases and ideas to include in their stories.

In writing, we will be writing more small moment stories. Students will continue to look at their stories and decide how to revise them to make them even better.

In math, we will be beginning to learn how to solve story problems. We will be using the TIPS model (look for info in Homework Binder)s. Check out this Wake County overview of the first quarter. To get an idea how we are teaching and learning about story problems, look at the unpacking document link.

For our PYP unit, Who We Are, we are learning about friendship and being peacemakers in our community..

Please remind your child to check the assignment on Edmodo when they first log on to know which Moby Max activity to do that day.

Also, please help them to remember to go back and click the Turn In button when they finish their Moby Max activity. I can then give them feedback on how they are doing.

Also, we had our first Letterland homework last week. Please be sure your child is completing the activity for spelling each night. I put a page in a plastic sleeve in each Homework Binder last week. Mrs. Baxter and I will be checking each day to see who has or has not completed this part of the homework. Last week's words were very easy, but the words will get much harder quickly as we move on to the 2nd grade units.

Lastly, don't forget that Reading Logs are to be completed each night. Lots of research has shown that reading each day is the best way to improve not only reading skills, but writing and math too! On October 1st we will begin the Book It Program. Each student that reads 20 or more books by the end of October will get a coupon for a free personal pizza at Pizza Hut. We will also keep track of how many books our whole class is reading each month. I can't wait to see our grand total in April!

Innisbook Fundraiser

All orders and money for the fundraiser need to be turned by Wednesday, September 30, either online or turned into me. You can put them in your child's Homework Binder and Mrs. Baxter and I will make sure it gets turned in to the PTA.

Thanks for supporting Millbrook!

Kid President Video

We have been talking about heroes for our PYP unit. On Monday, the kids will get to see this in class. He pretty much sums up what we hope the kids will learn from this part of the unit.

Gotta love this kid!
