Dear Park Village Families,
At Thursday night’s Board Meeting, the decision was made to postpone the return to on-campus learning temporarily to help minimize the spread of any illnesses and to reduce the impact of quarantining resulting from positive Covid-19 cases within our shared PUSD community. At Park Village, we will be returning to on-campus learning on Monday, February 1st. Please look to your individual teachers for specific schedules and information. VLA classes will remain in their current format with no changes.
We believe this two week “reset” will increase our ability to keep schools open through the remainder of the school year by avoiding repeated, disruptive quarantines. Our families have done a tremendous job thus far with home health checks, self-quarantines, and timely communication with our school office when questions or concerns arise. Now more than ever, we will need your help. We must all be extremely vigilant over the coming weeks so that this temporary closure will not be in vain. We must all work to continue to slow the spread of Covid-19 by wearing face coverings, keeping a safe distance from others, avoiding close contacts and gatherings, and remembering to wash hands frequently.
Additionally, if your family is considering travel, please be aware of California’s Travel Advisory and review this Important Information from the CDC. We appreciate your support in reducing the risk of exposure to our students, teachers, and staff.
Please note:
There will be no school this coming Monday, January 18th, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
ESS will reopen for childcare this coming Tuesday, January 19th. Hours are from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm daily for those families who are enrolled.
There will be no school for students on Friday, January 29th, as this is a PUSD Professional Growth Day.
Materials Distribution-Tuesday, January 19th (see schedule below)
We will distribute materials drive-thru style in the main parking lot. Please look for the sign indicating the lane you will enter. Remain in your vehicle and a staff member will bring materials to your car.
**If you do not see your child’s teacher on this list, you have already received the materials your child will need or your child’s teacher will contact you regarding alternate plans.

This Spirit Day is meant for you and everyone in our school to wear black, white and grey. . You can wear any clothes that you would normally wear (T-shirts, pants, long sleeves, etc.) but in black, white or grey. Avoid other colors!
Remember that every Friday is Penguin Spirit Day, so make sure to wear your Penguin merchandise!
With that, I hope you are prepared for Monochrome Day!
The 2021 Groove-a-Thon is COMING!! Save the Date
Dust off your dancing shoes because the 1st Annual Groove-A-Thon will be here before you know it! The Groove-A-Thon will take place on Tuesday, February 9. We call the event a Groove-A-Thon with the idea that your class can dance to music, follow videos from GoNoodle, or get outside for a fun activity. It's up to your teacher and classmates to determine how to get the blood pumping -- whether you’re on campus or learning from home. This Foundation FUNdraiser raises money to support our Virtual Learning Programs, COVID-19 related school supplies, Science, Technology, Learning Garden, Library and, also encourages healthy habits for all of our Penguins.
On January 26 you will receive all the information you need to start your fundraising. That gives you two weeks to ask your family and friends to help support our school.

Counselor Corner- January
“The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes.” William James
Happy New Year! We hope you are starting off this year happy, healthy and with a positive outlook. You may have read “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl. In this book he teaches us by his life experience that, though life is hard, how one thinks about his circumstances is far more important than the situation itself. Frankl’s ability to choose his own attitude, no matter how bad the conditions, helped Frankl to survive war and all its atrocities. He calls the ability to choose our own attitude, in any given circumstance, “the last of the human freedoms.”
Researchers at Harvard University concluded from a study conducted a few years ago that up to 85% of our success in life is due to attitude, while the other 15% is due to ability. That can be encouraging for all of us. Our attitude comes from what we say to ourselves about life and everyday happenings. Our self-talk is ultimately of our choosing. Our attitudes are the way we choose to view life. And the way we approach it will determine our success or failure.
Three important choices we can make are:
1. Think with an open mind. When we think we know all the answers or that our view is the only possible one we are not open.
2. Think for yourself. So many things influence our thinking: the media, advertising, TV, friends, family etc. We can weigh it all and choose our own thoughts with our own beliefs, values and priorities. Parents have a huge impact on children’s thinking.
3. Think constructively. People who succeed in life don’t think they can; they believe they can.
Give your children the gift of a great, can do, attitude! It will make a difference in their lives.
“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you, as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you, as by the way your mind looks at what happens.” John Homer Miller
Sending you all best wishes,

**REMINDERS**
Celebrate with a “Birthday Book” Donation to the Library
The school library’s Birthday Book donation program is an opportunity to celebrate your child’s birthday (or another milestone occasion) by choosing a book for the library's collection. Your gift will benefit PVES students for years to come!
After the donated book arrives at the library, a special bookplate with your child's name and birthday age will be placed inside the front cover. I will also reserve the book so your child can be the first student to check it out from the library (unless they choose not to).
This program is completely optional, but new books are greatly appreciated by the students, teachers, and me! Thank you very much! -- Mrs. Fleming, Librarian
How the Birthday Book Club works:
1) Choose a book from the Park Village ES Library Wish List on Amazon any time. There are a wide variety of preselected books to choose from. You can ship the books directly to the library.
2) Complete the Birthday Book Donation form online so I know what to expect.
3) When the book is ready for check-out, your child can be the first one to borrow it.
After the book is returned, it becomes part of the library collection for other students to enjoy.
Thank you for supporting reading and learning at Park Village!
No Place For Hate
We are excited to share with you that Park Village was officially designated as a No Place For Hate school again this year! This past week teachers kicked off this valuable program with students. As a reminder, The “No Place For Hate” program was created by the national Anti Defamation League (ADL) organization and was developed to organize schools to work together and develop projects that enhance the appreciation of diversity and foster harmony amongst diverse groups. The campaign empowers schools to promote respect for individual and group differences while challenging prejudice and bigotry. Each year we will start by having all staff and students take the No Place For Hate Pledge seen here.
I PROMISE to do my best to treat everyone fairly.
I PROMISE to do my best to be kind to everyone -even if they are not like me.
IF I SEE someone being hurt or bullied, I will tell a teacher
EVERYONE should be able to feel safe and happy in school.
I WANT OUR SCHOOL to be No Place For Hate.
I PROMISE to abide by and uphold the No Place For Hate Pledge.
We will also be implementing three school wide activities throughout the year. The goal of these activities are to continue to find ways of building a more inclusive and respectful campus and to empower students to take a stand against hate and bullying. In addition to school wide activities, we have created a “Virtual Inclusion Lounge” for parents and students to access throughout the year. We hope students and parents will explore these resources together to have discussions around the topics of diversity, tolerance, and acceptance. Click here to access the “Virtual Inclusion Lounge” If you want to learn more about the No Place for Hate program in San Diego visit. https://sandiego.adl.org/no-place-for-hate. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Your “No Place For Hate” Team Members
