Comp-Sci Weekly

Principals Message
Hello CompSci Families,
Happy Friday the 13th! The weather is looking decent, so maybe it won't be unlucky after all. We had a good week here at school, although it didn't seem any shorter than the five day weeks. The kids have worked hard. This week I popped into several writing classes, and the kids were responding to the level of worked required by the teacher. Writing is often hard for kids, so it has been great to see them rise to the challenge.
I would like to remind you of one part of our very easy dress code. We do not allow open toed slides--it is a safety concern. If your child chooses to wear those to school, please remind them they will need to change when they get here. We appreciate your support!
Finally, remember this Wednesday is a half day!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Jill Wnuk

Equity Corner: Episode 3
Greetings Comp Sci Families!
This week we conclude our wonderful celebration of Hispanic Heritage month, and look forward to continuing to celebrate all of the differences and diversity that makes our school unique and wonderful! Our adult Equity Committee also got together and discussed exciting guest speakers both in academia and the arts to visit and inspire our students.
We look forward to continuing this work together!

Theme Coach Update
Our Computer Science and Technology classes are grounded in International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards. Innovative Designer is the next standard, focusing on the students’ ability to use technology creatively to solve problems and design new solutions. This standard aims to cultivate students’ creativity and problem solving skills using technology, assisting students to be able to address complex challenges with innovative solutions.
What does the standard Innovative Designer look like in the CompSci classroom? Design thinking is the focus, which is used to enable students to collaboratively identify real world problems and use technology to develop and communicate solutions. Empathy is at the heart of design thinking. Students are encouraged to look at different perspectives of a problem and target a specific pain point to develop a solution. By collecting and analyzing data and using credible resources students go through the iterative process of refining solutions. Design projects may include building a website, working with Canva, coding, developing infographics , 90 second videos or building a robotic device. With the emphasis on empathy , students learn to develop innovative solutions providing essential skills they can use now and build upon for future use. This highlights CompSci’s curriculum providing unique opportunities for our students to learn essential skills for the digital age.

CREC’s Statement of Diversity and Inclusion
“Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) is an intentionally diverse social justice organization whose members work to acknowledge, respect, and empathize with people of all different identifiers, such as race, socioeconomic status, gender identity and expression, education, age, ability, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, language, nationality, and religion. In accordance with CREC’s mission of equity, excellence, and success for all through high-quality educational services, our staff and students commit to participate in and support ongoing equity and inclusion programming through curricular and co-curricular offerings, professional learning, and local and national partnerships. Moreover, CREC staff and students strive to understand and confront the symptoms and causes of systematic oppression—ranging from implicit biases to micro aggressions to discriminatory policies, practices and traditions—that benefit privileged groups. While at CREC, staff and students commit to affirm and honor the lived experiences of others, to willingly challenge inherited beliefs and ideologies, and consequently learn, grow, and serve.”
