What we've been up to.
- We have been looking closely for errors in our morning message to practice recognizing letter reversals, fixing punctuation omissions, and using capital letters sparingly.
- We are becoming experts at adding numbers to ten. We can show you how to add by using lots of different strategies including a number line, a ten frame, fingers, or by building a cube snake with counting cubes. Your students also have a basic understanding of how to create and read a simple table.
- We painted our own truffula trees and thought about our Earth day Promises. Our work is on display in the hallway!
- We are working very hard to tell the difference between, b, d, q, p, g, 9 and 6, especially when writing them. For our greeting this week, we mixed them all up and sorted them out again.
- Favorite greeting of the week: Over and Under! Ask your child to demonstrate.
- Our science center is abuzz with planting activities and observations. This week we all planted a seed in our own planter and also planted several unidentified mystery seeds. We predicted what might grow and we are now waiting for them to sprout.
- We began our author study of Mo Willems by reading That is Not a Good Idea and making predictions about the end of the story. Guess what? It had a surprise ending!
Thanks to our Mystery Reader!
Ben's dad, Marcus, came in on Ben's Birthday to read us some Frog and Toad stories. We will read more Frog and Toad stories when our guest frog arrives.
Happy sixth birthday to Ben :)

The things kids say. For real.
After discussing that plants, trees, fruits and vegetables grow from seeds, trees or vines, students applied their knowledge by looking at pictures of random objects and coloring in things that grow from seeds.
Mrs. Cohen: You didn't color the pineapple. Do you think it is part of a plant?
Student: No. It's a fruit.
Mrs. Cohen: Well, a fruit is a plant.
Student: But a pineapple grows from a tree.
Mrs. Cohen: Hmmm. What about those little brown things in the pineapple? This is a hard one. I'll look it up. (Kindergarten is a busy place, so I'm just looking it up now...)
What do you think?

Asnwer: You know that "what grows from a seed?" page that came home with the pineapple colored in? Yeah, sorry about that. A pineapple grows from neither a tree nor a seed. Who saw that coming? Another surprise ending.
