Orientation Information 2019-2020

We are so excited that your children will be joining us in the upcoming year. The kindergarten team and the staff at Mary Scroggs knows and understands what a big milestone this is for you and your child. We are committed to providing your child with the best kindergarten experience possible. We hope the following information will help you plan for the start of school.

Meet the Teacher

501 Kildaire Road

Chapel Hill, NC

On Thursday, August 22nd, from 4:30-5:30, the entire Mary Scroggs kindergarten team will be on the playground to meet and greet students and families. At this time, kindergarten rooms will not be open. This is a wonderful way for us to meet and greet all families!

Kindergarten Orientation, August 27 or August 28

Last Name Begins with the letter A - L: Your child will start on Tuesday, August 27th. Please bring your child to the cafeteria on Tuesday, August 27th to sign in your child from 8:15-8:30 if your last name begins with the letter A-L. (Note: Your child will not come to school on Wednesday, August 28th.)

Last Name Begins with the letter M - Z: Your child will start on Wednesday, August 28th. (Your child will not come to school on Tuesday, August 27th). Please bring your child to the cafeteria on Wednesday, August 28th to sign in your child from 8:15-8:30 if your last name begins with the letter M-Z.

At 8:30, students will line up to begin the day and head to the kindergarten classrooms! This is a good time for hugs, kisses and to let your children know how excited you are for them to begin kindergarten! We know it can be emotional, but we expect families to say goodbye at this time and stay in the cafeteria for a short orientation with kindergarten teachers, PTA, and administration. This short orientation will begin promptly at 8:30 and end at 9:00. All families are expected to attend.

Other important things to know for both days: Transportation is not provided, after school care is not available, and we will not have lunch. Please pick up your child in the lobby at 12:00. The only supplies needed for this day is a hearty snack. On this day, we will do many fun activities to get to know your child!

Tadpole Time, August 29 and August 30

On Thursday and Friday, you will bring your child to the kindergarten wing by following the blue path. We will have extra staff on hand to help you find your child’s starting room. These will be a few more days for us to get to know your child before classes are assigned. This will be a full school day with snack, lunch, and bus transportation. The After-School program will be open on Thursday for those enrolled. You may bring school supplies these days. Most supplies are communal, but please clearly label clothes and place them in a labeled Ziploc bag and label snack/lunch boxes. Your child will need money to buy lunch or should bring a lunch from home. In kindergarten, we have a snack each day. We try to have extra snacks just in case, but please make every attempt to send your child with a healthy snack every day. We also appreciate contributions of extra snacks for children who may forget theirs.

Class Lists

On Friday, August 30th, we will send out an email and/or phone call through our automated messaging system to let you know when class lists are determined. This call will come by early evening.

We value your input and the form below will be a chance for you to tell us about your child. We even ask that you include a picture if possible. We ask that you complete the form as soon as possible and no later than Wednesday, August 14th. This will give us a chance to review the form and get administrative things done on our end. Thanks in advance for your prompt attention to this important matter. If the form did not load below, click on this link to complete the form.

Thanks for reading this far....

Please make sure your child is registered for Kindergarten! Also, encourage friends, family, and neighbors to register so that we can begin the year fully prepared to meet all of the children’s needs. We will look forward to sharing more information about our classrooms and the curriculum at the Back-to-School Night.

Thanks in advance for trusting us with your children. We enjoy doing our orientation this way because it allows all teachers to get to know all of the students and we truly take a team approach with regard to their social, emotional and academic development. We are looking forward to a wonderful year together! Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation. We are so excited and can’t wait to see you all soon!
