¡Feliz viernes y espero que todos hayan tenido una buena semana! Hemos tenido una buena semana aquí en la escuela y hemos disfrutado de este agradable clima cálido al final de la semana. Sabemos que puede que no dure mucho, pero es agradable estar afuera bajo el sol por un rato. A medida que avanzamos este mes, esperamos con ansias nuestra celebración del Mes de la Historia Negra en unas pocas semanas el jueves 23 de febrero. ¡Nos complace anunciar que los famosos bailarines de la escuela secundaria Jefferson serán nuestra presentación principal esa noche! Estamos emocionados de recibirlos, así como el Coro Juvenil Bravo y algunos talentos locales de James John. Dear Families,

Happy Friday and I hope you all have had a good week! We have had a good week here at school and have enjoyed this nice warm weather at the end of the week. We know it may not last, but it is nice to be outside in the sun for a little while. As we move through this month, we are looking forward to our Black History Month celebration in a few weeks on Thursday, February 23. We are excited to announce that the famous Jefferson High School Dancers will be our headlining performance for that night! We are excited to host them as well as the Bravo Youth Choir and some homegrown James John talent. We will also be hosting dinner beforehand as well as activities for the whole family, so please mark your calendars and join us that evening. Lastly, we have announced it in all of our newsletters, but I will ask again that you complete the Successful Schools Survey (information below) if you haven’t yet been able to complete it. The survey results give us valuable information on how we can improve our school and our school district as a whole. I hope you all have a good weekend!

To ensure we continue to provide high quality, rigorous learning experiences that meet the needs of our learners and prepare them for college and career, we need your feedback. We want to know what you think.

To administer these surveys, we have partnered with Panorama Education to conduct our 2023 Family Survey. Panorama safeguards your privacy, keeping your responses

The English Language Proficiency Assessment is a yearly summative assessment of English language skills for students who are native speakers of other languages. Much like the ELD program itself, the assessment is a state and federal requirement protecting the civil rights of students with limited English proficiency (LEP). Public schools must teach both the spoken and written English language to LEP students and show evidence of their learning. For more information about federal civil rights laws protecting students with limited English proficiency, see ELL 101: Learning for Justice.

The ELPA summative assessment is organized into 4 domains: reading, writing, listening, and speaking; and is organized into 3 grade level bands: K/1st, 2nd/3rd, and 4th/5th. Students are on a 4 to 7 year trajectory to score proficient on the ELPA. This is the amount of time generally needed for second language learners to acquire complex academic language proficiency in English. Students should go up one level in at least two of the four domains each year in order to stay on track to proficiency. See ELPA Achievement Descriptors for more information about what students should be able to do at each proficiency level.

James John's ELPA testing window is February 21st through Spring Break. We have 99 students that will be assessed this year and we have 10 different languages represented at our school: Spanish, Akateko, Q'anjob'al, K'iché, Chu, Hmong, Lao, Haitian Creole, Finnish and Ukrainian. During this time, students will not be receiving their regular ELD services. Students will not be assessed during math or WIN. Please let Sam, Will, or Reneé know if you have any questions about planning for the ELPA.

La Evaluación de dominio del idioma inglés es una evaluación sumativa anual de las habilidades del idioma inglés para estudiantes cuyo idioma nativo es otro idioma. Al igual que el programa ELD en sí, la evaluación es un requisito estatal y federal que protege los derechos civiles de los estudiantes con dominio limitado del inglés (LEP). Annual Reading Fair:

Kappa Delta Pi, the School of Education honor society, is once again hosting their annual Reading Fair and Family STEM Day on Sunday, February 26th from 10:00am to 1:00pm at the University of Portland Chiles Center. This FREE event is an opportunity for families and children to come spend an afternoon together and share their love of reading and STEM. Children of all ages are welcome to participate in fun hands-on activities. Every child that comes to this reading fair will get to take home a FREE book, from infant to high school!

Summer Learning Program:

We have begun accepting applications for our annual Summer Learning Program! In this program, the learning focuses on the Oregon State Benchmarks appropriate for each child in mathematics, language arts (reading, writing, and speaking), and any other subjects in which the student needs help. Our Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidates tutor/teach students according to their learning needs. There are usually 4-5 students per 2-3 MAT candidates.

This year’s program will run July 5-August 3, Monday-Thursday, 9:30am-11:30am, and we welcome students entering grades 2-11 in 2023-24. The cost of the program is $125, though scholarships are available.

Kappa Delta Pi, la sociedad de honor de la Escuela de Educación, organiza una vez más su Feria de lectura anual y el Día STEM familiar el domingo 26 de febrero de 10:00 a. m. a 1:00 p. m. en el Centro Chiles de la Universidad de Portland. Este evento GRATUITO es una oportunidad para que las familias y los niños pasen una tarde juntos y compartan su amor por la lectura y STEM. Los niños de todas las edades son bienvenidos a participar en divertidas actividades prácticas. ¡Cada niño que venga a esta feria de lectura podrá llevarse a casa un libro GRATIS, desde la infancia hasta la escuela secundaria!

Programa de aprendizaje de verano:

¡Hemos comenzado a aceptar solicitudes para nuestro programa anual de aprendizaje de verano! En este programa, el aprendizaje se enfoca en los Puntos de referencia del estado de Oregón apropiados para cada niño en matemáticas, artes del lenguaje (lectura, escritura y habla) y cualquier otra materia en la que el estudiante necesite ayuda. Nuestros candidatos a la Maestría en Artes en la Enseñanza (MAT, por sus siglas en inglés) brindan tutoría/enseñan a los estudiantes de acuerdo con sus necesidades de aprendizaje. Por lo general, hay 4-5 estudiantes por cada 2-3 candidatos de MAT.

El programa de este año se llevará a cabo del 5 de julio al 3 de agosto, de lunes a jueves, de 9:30 am a 11:30 am, y damos la bienvenida a los estudiantes que ingresan a los grados 2-11 en 2023-24. El costo del programa es de $125, aunque hay becas disponibles.
