"Like" (a movie) Screening at Lyons Township High School this Wednesday For Students and Parents
In today's technology-rich world, daily use of cell phones, tablets, and computers is the norm not only for most adults, but for many kids, as well. A simple fact is that the children in our school will never know a world before cell phones. We have made a commitment to supporting you and helping you navigate the world of the digital native. As such, I have a wonderful parent learning experience exclusively for parents in the Lyons Township.
The Lyons Township school districts have partnered with the Parent Community Network to bring you a community screening of LIKE a documentary about the impact of social media on our lives. This documentary explores the impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. The goal of the film is to inspire and help equip us to self-regulate. The movie is described on the Like website as:
Technology is a tool. It's here to stay and social platforms are a place to connect, share and care, but what's really happening? Are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain, on our lives and on our civilization, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together. Our goal for this film is to inspire people of all ages, especially kids, to self regulate. It's not about blame. It's about looking in the mirror and empowering ourselves to create balance in our lives and to learn to be there for each other.
We hope you can join your neighbors for this important screening. The screening will take place on Wednesday, January 16 at the LTHS North Campus in the Reber Center (100 S Brainard Ave, La Grange, IL 60525) at 6:45 PM. This is a FREE event and parents are encouraged to attend with their children.

CogAT Testing January 23 and 24-Grades 5-7
This is letting you know that Pleasantdale Middle School students in grades 5 – 7 will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) on Wednesday, January 23, and Thursday, January 24. We will have a special schedule on these days that will be shared in next week's Tiger Times Newsletter. This test measures general reasoning abilities in three domains: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal and is one component used in placing students into classes. Please help your child do his/her best by encouraging an early bedtime, providing a healthy breakfast, and having a conversation with him/her about always doing his/her best on classroom and standardized tests. Thank you!
5 Essentials Parent Survey
On December 17, you received an invitation from our superintendent, Dr. Dave Palzet, to complete the 5 Essentials Parent Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child's school from the perspective of parents, teachers, and students. In order to receive the most detailed reports from the survey data, we need parent participation. Personally, I have taken the survey for my kids' schools and it took me about 10 minutes. Please help us garner additional feedback by completing the survey at https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/login/
Thank you!
Tiger Tipline
While it is always best to talk directly to a staff member, we understand that sometimes this can be uncomfortable or difficult for students or parents. At Pleasantdale Middle School, we offer the Tiger Tipline as an anonymous tool for reporting unsafe, uncomfortable, or unkind behaviors and situations. We explicitly teach the students that if they ever see something or hear something that makes them feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or is unkind, either online or in person, they should tell a “trusted adult” which could be parents, school personnel, or other adults in their lives. The Tiger Tipline can be accessed here and we will post the link in Schoology and create a shortcut to the link on the student devices for easy access.
Dates for the Year
If you are like me, you want to know the dates for the year as far in advance as possible. As long as you understand that something may change due to unforeseen circumstances, I’d like to provide you access to the dates we’ve planned for the year (many of which are in the paper calendar you received in the mail). To access the middle school calendar dates, please click here.
