Weather By: Greta and Kristal
This month in science, we have been learning about weather. Everyone in the class picked a city to study weather on. Some cities that people picked were, New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco and many others!
In science, we get a little sticky note and write the weather that our city is having that day. We write the humidity, air pressure , temperature, wind chill, wind gust and precipitation. It sounds complicated, but it's actually not.
We learned how snow, rain, and hail are made and how it has to be a certain temperature for either of those to fall. We also learned about the water cycle. The water cycle starts with evaporation. Small bits of water float into the air, then condensation happens. The condensation process takes place in the clouds, and after that comes precipitation. Then, it snows or rains, and the cycle repeats again.
As you can see, we have learned a lot about weather!⛅️
Four Different Ways to Multiply By: Carlie and Parks
There are many different ways to multiply. Here are four different ways to multiply. There is Lattice, Chunking, FOIL and the standard algorithm.
One reason we need to know these different ways to multiply is, what if we forget how to do it one way then we can use a different method. Here is what you do with all of the methods. First chunking, what we do in chunking is we make a box and split up the numbers and multiply them, but it can be confusing! Lattice is very much like the chunking method. You make a box and in each little box you put a slash through it and you split up the numbers and multiply each number and you get that and you put it in the little box, then add them. The slashes divide what row you add them in. This is probably the most confusing! The next different way is foil, foil stands for something important. It stands for first, outer, inner, and last. So you put the numbers in parentheses and multiply order of first, outer, inner, last. Lastly, there is the standard algorithm method. The standard algorithm method is where you just line the numbers up and you multiply. Then you add your rows together to get the final product. We think this is the easiest way to multiply!
Kendama Trauma By: Stella,Nick and Alex M.
Have you ever played with a toy called a Kendama or a Yo-Yo? Lately, they have been very popular at Skyline and Solana Vista. Luckily, Mrs. Denham will allow the use of these items but limited to only snack and lunch recess, (not including discovery lab days) in a designated area. Kids love the toys. Should we get to play with them in the mornings and after school? Or would it bring up problems?
A Kendama is a type of toy related to Yo Yos. They are shaped like a hammer (but mostly made out of birch wood and marble) and have a ball on top connected to string so you can do tricks! The reason why Kendamas are limited is because sometimes people can get hurt. Also, it takes away time for students to be active.
We believe that the limitations should not remain like this for three reasons. The first reason is that it keeps some kids who have nothing to do at before school recess busy. This means that lonely kids that just roam around during recess can have a group of friends that all like the same thing. The second reason is that kids love them! They are fun to show your friends tricks if your family may not be as interested. Lastly, Kendamas and Yo Yos take up more time and make a very short recess seem longer. In a game such as four square, you have to wait in a line and that will take about five minutes to actually get in the game.
We talked to our teacher , Mrs.Goodman, and she stated, " I don't really think that there is a problem with the kids using Kendamas." Also, to get multiple opinions, we asked Evan from our class about what he thinks about the situation. He said, "We should have more time with Kendamas because we don't have enough time to play with them during school. "
In conclusion, we agree that Kendamas should be used before school, but only if the kids follow the rules and respect others and not hurt others with the Kendamas.
Discovery lab schedule By: Emily and Ava
Recently we have changed our Discovery Lab schedule. The new schedule is great and we are here to explain it! At 10:20 we go to our first class, which will go until 11:00. Then we will go to lunch. After that, we go to our second class. Next, it is off to recess for a break! Lastly, we go to our next two classes. After those, the day is over!
The benefits of the new schedule are that we get to enjoy all of our Discovery Labs! Some of the cons are that every 4 weeks we don't get music because the teacher isn't there that early. "I like the new Discovery Lab schedule because we get more time to enjoy our classes!" said James W. That is the new schedule!
Sky Bowl By: Juanita and Eric
All kids are interested in the Sky Bowl this year. The teams left in the playoffs are the Panthers and the Jaguars. The Jaguars beat the Falcons 22 to 14. The Panthers beat the Seahawks 22 to 12. Now, they play each other in the Sky Bowl. This was a really unexpected Sky Bowl because the number 3 seed plays the number 5 seed for the championship. This is going to be an interesting game because anybody can win!
Ask Astrid
Dear Astrid,
I have a problem with my friends. Two of my friends are leaving me out, and I have nobody to play with. I still want to be friends with them because they are really nice, but one of them is turning my other friend's back on me and there is no one else that I would rather play with. I need your advice, Astrid.
Sincerely,
Your Desperate Writer
Dear Your Desperate Writer,
If your friends are leaving you out, you should go ask your friends why are they leaving you out. But talk to your other friend privately. We also think you should find someone else to play with, because at Skyline there are a lot of people to play with. Also, make new friends because if some friends are mad at you, you can play with your other friends. If that doesn't work, go to Ms. Jill.
Sincerely,
Astrid

Martin Luther King Day By: Patrick and Logan
Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous speech called "I Have a Dream" when we didn't even exist. What we are going to tell you about is back in the 1960's before most of your parents were born and a time when African Americans weren't treated equally. In this time, they had to sit at the back of the bus, lose rights because they looked different than whites, and were not even allowed to go to the same schools as whites. Martin Luther King Jr. was a man of honor. He stood up for African Americans by giving peaceful speeches and not having fights because he believed that would make the problem at hand worse than it already was. With every speech he was winning more people over to his opinion, white and black. But sadly, there were still some people who did not agree with his ideas. Martin Luther King died when he was 39 years old.
Did you know Martin Luther king day in on his birthday? He was born on January 15th 1929 in Atlanta. But his holiday is on the third week in January. After he died the federal holiday group asked for a holiday for us to remember Martin Luther King Jr. It took 32 years for congress to accept the date and holiday. Then they also set up agreements with 48 states and a few other countries. Martin Luther King Jr. Day serves multiple purposes. One of them is to help us think about civil rights. It also honors the total life of Dr. King.
