SCIS Principal Newsletter

March 24, 2023

Hello Sloan Creek Families!

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has had an amazing week. I just returned from a 2 day conference in Irving and am excited to implement the learning to better serve students at Sloan Creek. It is imperative to me as a leader that I never stop learning and growing, as I have the same expectations for our teachers and students.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Please reach out if you ever need anything!

Attendance Information

Attendance continues to be a top priority for Lovejoy ISD. It should come as no surprise that attendance has a direct relationship with student learning. Additionally, public school funding is provided by the State of Texas based on each district's average daily attendance (ADA).

Lovejoy has developed an Attendance Task Force consisting of staff, parents, and students to formulate ideas about how to positively impact ADA in our district. One suggestion is to update the community via weekly principal communication on the number of absences each campus has accrued YTD along with the budgetary impact of those absences.

Spinal Screening-5th Grade Girls ONLY!!!

Dear Parents/Guardians of 5th grade girls:

Our school will do spinal screenings April 10-14, 2023 during your student's PE class.

State law requires that schools must screen students for abnormal spinal curvature in accordance with the following schedule:

• Girls will be screened two times, once at age 10 (grade 5) and again at age 12 (grade 7).

• Boys will be screened one time at age 13 or 14 (grade 8).

Trained screeners will check your child for signs of spinal problems like scoliosis. Catching a spinal problem early can make the treatment much easier. Not treating spinal problems can lead to serious health problems. The screening is simple. Screeners will look at your child’s back while he or she stands and bends forward.

Important Recommendations:

• Students should bring shorts to school for the exam.

• Girls should wear a thin t-shirt or a sports bra or a two-piece swimsuit top underneath their shirt on exam day.

• If girls are wearing a sports bra or a two-piece swimsuit top underneath their shirt, it is recommended they remove their shirt for the screening.

• The girls will be screened separately and one at a time with 2 female screeners present.

The school will send you a letter if your child does NOT pass the screening. The letter will tell you how to follow up with a doctor. This screening is not a medical exam. Your child still needs to see a doctor for checkups.

If you do not wish to have your child screened for any reason, you must notify the nurse through email, no later than Friday, 4/7/2023 by 3:00pm.

Thank you for your cooperation.

They will be wearing a high visibility vest with a handheld STOP sign. Please pay attention to our walkers and staff to ensure all make it home safely. A map is located below for review.
