Meet Mr. Garner!
● What is your full name?
o James Buckley Garner
● How old are you?
o I was born August 15th, 1966, and I am a 1984 graduate of Hartselle High School, so I am 48 years old or young depending on your perspective.
● How do you think your age affects your relationship with the student body?
o Over the past 30 years after high school, I have been blessed with many interesting and unique life experiences. I would like to think that I am still young enough to connect with the current generation of students, along with being more mature and better prepared to help them identify and make plans to pursue their own dreams and passions in life.
● What have your previous jobs been?
o After high school, I began working for Computer Sciences Corporation in Huntsville as a data technician while attending college UAH. During college, I worked as an engineering cooperative student for a division of Motorola that made computer modems. After graduation from UAH in 1988, I accepted a full-time engineering position with Motorola which lasted about 14 years. I returned to graduate school at UAH to complete my master’s degree in mathematics along with teaching undergraduate courses for two years. In late 2012, I made a decision to pursue teaching full-time as a second career and returned to UAH to complete my teacher certification along with gaining valuable experience by substituting at Decatur and Austin High Schools. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to do an internship at HHS and HJHS in the spring of 2014, while also serving as a volunteer basketball coach for the Hartselle Lady Tigers. The results of these efforts led to an opportunity to teach and coach at HHS this fall, and I feel truly blessed to be part of such an outstanding school system and community.
● What did you want to be when you were little?
o Either an astronaut, fireman, or professional athlete
● What was your first honest opinion of Hartselle High?
o Hartselle is my high school alma mater - I have worked in over 30 countries around the world, and I agree with Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz - there is no place like home! I am so blessed to have an opportunity to teach at HHS, and be part of such a wonderful, supportive, caring community and staff.
● Has there been a staff member in particular who has made your transition here easier?
o The entire HHS staff has been so helpful and supportive with my transition to teaching. The teachers in the mathematics and science departments have shared loads of information and supplies with me, and the front office staff have worked very hard to help me everyday.
o If I have to choose some specific staff members, then it would be Coach Booth and Coach Orr. When I graduated from HHS in 1984, I either wanted to be an engineer or a mathematics teacher like Coach Booth or a basketball coach like Coach Orr. Coach Booth was such a positive influence on my class while attending HHS, and he has been very supportive and helpful with my transition to teaching. Coach Orr was one of our coaches at the civic center when I was young, and has accepted the difficult task of trying to mentor and teach me how to be a basketball coach, so I am eternally grateful to both.
● What were you like in high school?
o I was somewhat shy and quiet in high school, but I tried my best to be the best student-athlete and classmate that I could be. I was/am very competitive, and I truly love the game of basketball - if there was a gym open in the area, I was usually the first one there to get a game started.
o As I reflect back on my secondary school years, I am just so thankful that I lived in the Hartselle school district and that I had supportive parents, teachers, coaches, and classmates to help me along the way.
● What type of music do you listen to?
o I like all types of music, but my radio is normally tuned to a country music station, or one that plays the best of the 80’s.
● What are your favorite books, movies, or TV shows?
o Big Bang Theory, Harry Potter, World Fishing Network, Cable News, College Football - War Eagle!
