October is National Bullying Prevention Month

Bullying is unfair and one-sided treatment of a peer that happens when they are being continuously hurt, frightened, threatened or being left out on purpose. In an effort to prevent bullying, schools, as well as other agencies such as The Center for Prevention of Abuse, are uniting communities around the world to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention.

I know often times, students have difficulty determining the difference between actual bullying and conflict. The Center for Prevention of Abuse uses the acronym HOUR to help distinguish bullying from tattling and conflict. HOUR refers to the four defining factors of bullying. The defining factors are questions we ask to make our determination. First, is it hurtful? Second, is it one-sided? Third, is it unfair? Lastly, is it repeated? We encourage you to always keep an open dialogue between your children, reviewing the four defining factors of situations to determine if bullying is occurring, and then discuss how bullying can be handled if it is indeed happening.

In an effort to come together – in schools, communities, and online – and send one large ORANGE message of support, hope, and unity to show that we are together against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion...we ask that all students wear ORANGE on Wednesday, October 24th. Student Led Parent Teacher Conferences

Once again, we will be hosting student led parent teacher conferences October 17 & 18. Students are so excited to share with their families what they have been learning about and how they are progressing with their SMART goals they set at the beginning of the school year. This year, we will continue utilizing the online sign up system for conferences called sign up genius. Please be watching for a link to be sent through a remind text message or a paper reminder with the link for you to follow online. Please sign up for your child's conference as soon as possible. If you have any issues with the online sign up process, don't hesitate to call the office and Mr. Pollitt or Mrs. Weaver will be happy to assist you.

  • If you haven't yet liked Pleasant Hill Elementary School on Facebook and Twitter, please be sure to do so. This is a great way for you to stay connected and see what is taking place in your child's classroom.
  • Please remember how important it is to get your children to school on time each and every day. Students must be at school no later than 8:00. According to the parent/student handbook, if students are consistently tardy, they will receive consequences. After a student is tardy to school 3 times, a minor disciplinary referral will be issued to the student and parent contact will be made. After being tardy 6 times, a major disciplinary referral will be issued and an office detention will be served. When a student is tardy to school 10 times, he or she will lose field trip privileges. We want to be sure all PHS students arrive on time so they can maximize learning.
  • Parents/Guardians of students in 4-8th grade, please be sure you are aware of how your student is doing academically by checking Teacherease on a regular basis. If you do not yet have a login, please contact the office and we can get a parent account set up for you.
  • Thanks so much to all the families who donated items to the Panther Pride store. The students are thrilled to be able to buy new items from the store as they are rewarded for their good behavior. We truly appreciate your generosity.
  • Just an FYI for parents or guests who wish to join their child for lunch. Our adult meal prices have increased to $3.85 each. We are part of the National School Lunch Program and this price is set by the program. Therefore, it is mandated we charge this amount. We do welcome guests to join students for lunch. You just need to pay in the front office if you plan to eat the hot lunch.

Halloween Information

Students in grades Pre-K through 4 will be participating in the annual Halloween parade on October 31st. We are asking that all students come to school dressed in their costumes. Students are asked to refrain from wearing anything gory or any costumes that include weapons or makeup. The Halloween parade will begin promptly at 9:00 AM. Family members are welcome to join us for the parade. However, they will not be able to go to classrooms until AFTER the parade. All guests will be asked to proceed straight to the gym. At the conclusion of the parade, classroom parties will begin. These parties will run until 10:30 when students will eat lunch. School will be dismissed at 11:30.
