Here in H-town, collars are generally more blue than white and we know all too well about how WORK WORK WORK plays a vital role in contributing not only to our personal growth and success, but to that of our entire community as well. In the SCOH, this holds true both in the classroom and on the turf, court, diamond and course! All 21 of our sports know what it means to be a BRICKIE and compete with Purpose, Respect, Initiative, Discipline and Excellence. This is also known as Brickie PRIDE and these are the exact same characteristics displayed by workers who are honored each Labor Day!
WE are 1 TEAM here in The Friendly City ... WE are HO-BART!
I hope everyone gets to enjoy a day off tomorrow - you've earned it. Right now ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Cross Country
For the last decade plus, Hobart XC meets were run at Big Maple Lake County Park. Prior to that, it was Robinson Lake and Cressmoor Golf Course. This year, the Brickies FINALLY got to experience a real home-course advantage with the race being held at 2211 East 10th Street ... and our Bricks SHINED!!
Girls
It was a B-E-A-UTIFUL night as the Lady Brickies welcomed 8 other schools from around the area to compete in Hobart's 1st ever home meet. Overall, our girls ran EXTREMELY WELL on the newly designed course and took 2nd PLACE as a team! Led by freshman Cassie Cohen who WON the inaugural race (... see trivia question in 25 years), the Lady Bricks put all 5 varsity runners in the top 12 to finish with 38 points as a team! Juniors Ella Hornak (6th) and Kylee King (8th) made the top 10 and freshmen Audrey Turley (11th) and Millie Massie (12th) rounded out Hobart's top 5! Also earning hardware for a top 20 finish were junior Addy Black (16th) & senior Haylie Skripac (18th). The overall team champion was Illiana Christian who put 6 runners in the top 10 - wow. The Lady Vikings have now won two straight Hobart Invite championships.
Boys
The second race on Tuesday involved boys from 9 different schools chasing the same goal as the girls - a PR and hopefully some hardware! Coach A was looking for a "best effort" from the Brickies and that's EXACTLY what he got!! Our boys SHINED in placing 5 runners in the TOP 10 overall finishers!! Sophomore Felix Lopez was the top finisher for Hobart in 3rd place ... juniors Owen Stankich & Vinny Gutierrez were next into the chute in 5th & 6th ... and sophomore Kolin Gladney (9th) and freshman Durgon Click (10th) rounded out the top 5 for the Brickies! Unfortunately, just like in the girls race, Illiana Christian stole the championship in one of the closest races in recent memory ... 25-33. Still, Adam Sandler might say that Hobart's 2nd place finish in the team standings was "Not too shabby" considering the Vikings earned 11th at the 2021 semi-state.
Freshmen Lu Cohen (12th) & Ethan Murchek (13th), junior Quentin Stengel (18th), and sophomore Nick Meagher (19th) also earned spots in the top 20 for the Bricks and took home medals!
Overall, it was a GREAT DAY TO BE A BRICKIE as Hobart not only hosted the first ever race on school property, but all of our harriers ran STRONG!!
Legendary distance runner Steve Prefontaine used to say, "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift." The Brickies will definitely need their best over the next 7 days with races at New Prairie on Tuesday and the annual Bob Thomas Invite @ Lowell on Saturday! LET'S GO BRICKS!!

Volleyball
Monday, the Lady Brickies hit the road for the 2022-2023 NCC opener against Highland. Over the 1st two games, the competition level was high, but Hobart was able to close them out 25-18 & 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead. In the 3rd set ... it was ALL LADY BRICKIES!!! Our girls DOMINATED in a 25-9 win to earn a 3-0 VICTORY!!! Senior Gabby Tomich was simply AMAZING as she led the offensive attack for Hobart with 6 kills and 5 serving aces ... also adding 25 digs for the D-D-D-DEFENSE!! Junior Cailey Weber and sophomore Brooke Cawthon each tallied 5 kills ... seniors Addy Klemm (27) and Daeges Morgan (20) combined for 47 digs ... and sophomore Kilee Hite added 11 assists in the win!
On Tuesday, the KV Kougars visited The Friendly City for another NCC showdown and this one was definitely worth the price of admission! Hobart took the first set in a THRILLER 25-23! The Lady Kougars responded with a strong showing in the next two sets ... winning 12-25 & 18-25 to go ahead 2 games to 1. On the brink of elimination, our girls FOUGHT BACK HARD in the 4th game and won 25-21 to send the match into a 5th game!! With the final game only played to 15, the Lady Brickies jumped ahead and held on for an EDGE-OF-YOUR-SEAT 15-11 win for the overall 3-2 VICTORY!!! This was Hobart's first win over KV in 4 years!!! WHAT A GAME!! Tomich and junior Abby Roper combined for 17 kills ... Morgan had 4 serving aces ... Weber had 5 blocks ... Klemm recorded an astounding 45 digs ... and Hite & freshman Kalli Butcher collectively registered 26 assists in the hard fought win!!
Wednesday was our girls 3rd game in 3 days. What would they have left in the tank after the exhausting victory over KV on Tuesday? Well ... remember what DJ Khaled said?
After splitting the 1st two games against the visiting Merrillville Pirates, Hobart played extremely well over the final two games and WON in 4 games by a 3-1 margin!!! Tomich again controlled the net with a team-high 12 kills ... Weber had 4 blocks and Morgan had 35 digs to anchor the D-D-D-DEFENSE ... and the Lady Bricks collectively had 15 serving aces on the night!!
Hobart has won 5 IN A ROW ... currently sits at 10-2 on the year and 2-0 in Northwest Crossroads Conference play! Another TOUGH week is on the horizon with NCC contests against Lowell & Munster before traveling to Chesterton for a weekend invitational. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK WORK WORK LADIES!! WE BELIEVE!!

Boys Tennis
The Brickies had a busy week with matches on Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday ... not to mention an Invite @ New Prairie on Saturday!
On Tuesday, Hobart played Lowell in their 2nd NCC match of the young season. Anytime the Brickies & Devils line-up across from each other, there's a little something extra on the line ... and this one proved to be no different! This was a BATTLE ... particularly at #1 singles where Brickie senior Cam Gonzalez faced Tanner Mitsch from Lowell. Cam won the 1st set 7-6 after defeating Mitsch in a 7-5 tie-breaker. Then in the 2nd set, it was AGAIN tied 6-6 and AGAIN they played a tie-breaker, but this time it was GONZALEZ ALL THE WAY as Cam won 7-1 and earned the hard fought VICTORY for our boys! Unfortunately, that was the only win Hobart could muster against the experienced Devils and Lowell left town with a 4-1 win.
Wednesday, the Brickies traveled to Hammond Central for a non-conference match against the Wolves. Hobart made quick work of the Wolves in this one ... winning in straight sets at #1(Gonzalez), #2 (junior Jacob Lewis) & #3 (sophomore Levi Snyder) singles and earning forfeit wins at both doubles due to Hammond not fielding enough players! In fact, our boys only dropped 3 games combined and celebrated the VICTORY with a stop for ice cream on the way home!!
On Thursday, it was future NCC foe Hanover Central how visited the HHS tennis complex for the Brickies' 3rd match in 3 days. In yet another very competitive match throughout, the Wildcats showed why they will be a tough addition to the conference next year in defeating our boys 4-1. The lone victory for Hobart came at #3 singles where Snyder won in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
Saturday, the Brickies were "On The Road Again" (thank you Willie Nelson) @ New Prairie to compete in the NP Invitational ... and OUR BOYS SHINED! With a TOUGH DRAW at seemingly every spot, Hobart gave a TREMENDOUS EFFORT and placed 6th overall. Sophomore Levi Snyder earned 2nd place at #3 singles and brought home some hardware!!
The Brickies are 2-4 so far and 0-2 in NCC play, but are BATTLING every match and showing consistent improvement! No rest for the weary this week with two CRITICAL NCC matches vs. Highland (Tuesday) & Munster (Thursday) sandwiched around a trip to Illiana Christian on Wednesday. The week will conclude @ the Highland Doubles Invite on Saturday. Better eat our WHEATIES boys - LET'S GO!!
#ACES
Levi Snyder places 2nd at #3 singles at the New Prairie Invite!
Soccer
After an exciting start to the year for both boys & girls soccer, anticipation was high as they were scheduled to open NCC play against perennial powerhouse Munster this past week!
Girls
A Monday night tilt with Griffith was on the schedule, but some nasty forecasted weather put the brakes on this one ... rescheduled for Saturday, September 10th.
On Tuesday, Hobart welcomed NCC favorite Munster to The Brickyard. Over the last two years, Munster has defeated the Lady Brickies by a combined 17-2 score. This one had a different feel at the start with our girls entering the contest undefeated at 3-0 and playing with confidence! In an INTENSE first 40 minutes, the Lady Mustangs led just 1-0. Hobart came out in the 2nd half determined to get the offense going ... and it worked! Unfortunately, Munster was as solid as it gets on the defensive side of the field and was able to tack on 2 more goals to leave town with a 3-0 win. Moral victory for the Lady Bricks in defeat? Some say there is no such thing, but after a combined 17-2 scoring differential in the last two meetings ... I'd say a competitive 3-0 loss shows exactly how far our girls have come and should absolutely continue to build confidence moving forward!
Thursday was SENIOR NIGHT for the Lady Brickies as 8 players & families were recognized before the varsity contest against a much improved Illiana Christian squad. All 8 seniors ... Rhylee Cotton, Juliet Garcia, Viv Garcia, Jayla Lacny, Ella Martinez, Lindsey Montalvo, Paige Morton & Alejandra Rios ... earned the start from Coach Provins as a sign of appreciation & respect for what they've given to Hobart Girls Soccer. Halfway through the 1st half, the Lady Vikings scored to take a 1-0 lead. Late in the same half, senior Viv Garcia sent an INCREDIBLE shot into the back of the net from over 20 yards out to tie things up at 1-1!! Over the final 40 minutes of play, the Lady Brickies were on the offensive, but couldn't manage to get one by the Illiana goal-keeper and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Senior Rhylee Cotton was MAGNIFICENT in goal to help preserve the tie.
The Lady Brickies are now 3-1-1 on the year and 0-1 in NCC play. A trip to DeMotte to face Kankakee Valley is next up in conference action - GOOD LUCK LADIES!!
Boys
On Wednesday night, the Brickies hit the road for Munster to take on the Mustangs in a Northwest Crossroads Conference SHOWDOWN! Munster is a perennial power in the NCC, but our boys earned a come-from-behind 3-2 victory a year ago that acted like a springboard towards Hobart earning our 1st conference championship in 20 years! Needless to say, there was a lot on the line on Wednesday off Columbia Ave in Munster.
After 40 minutes of fierce competition, the host Mustangs held a slim 1-0 advantage. Munster kept the Brickies at bay until roughly 8 minutes left in the contest when junior Luke Weinman V sent one into the net for a GOOOOOOOAAAAAAL to tie things up at 1-1!! The assist went to classmate Liam Deel and Hobart was back in business! Over the final minutes of regulation, play was frantic ... but neither team was able to score, which meant OVERTIME! In two extra sessions, some phenomenal D-D-D-DEFENSE was on display and the score remained 1-1. So ... to decide this one, each team would get 5 penalty kicks in a winner-take-all scenario. Hobart put 4 out of 5 PKs in the net and WON the edge-or-your-seat THRILLER!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!! PKs were made by Weinman, junior Jack Harris, sophomore Eddie Udave and freshman Gabe Rodriguez ... junior Parker Glass had an AMAZING 12 saves on the night to help our boys earn the HARD FOUGHT VICTORY!!!
On Saturday, our boys were looking to keep the momentum going after reaching cloud 9 Wednesday against Munster. The unfortunate opponent ... Michigan City. The result ... a DOMINATING 7-1 VICTORY by the Brickies!! Hobart got 7 GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLS from 7 different players ... Deel, Rodriguez, juniors Carlos Gayton, Thomas Martin & Jack Cruz, sophomore Kazeem "Junior" Tijana, and freshman Kole Ketchum all got in on the action! WOW!! Glass and freshman Hunter Rushing combined for 3 saves at the net in the convincing win.
Hobart is now 5-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in NCC play. Next up is a Wednesday night NCC contest at home against Kankakee Valley. DON'T STOP NOW BOYS!!

Lady Brickies on SENIOR NIGHT!
Brickies DEFEAT Munster!
Girls Golf
With the NCC Championship meet approaching fast, the Lady Brickies are doing all they can to FINISH STRONG!
On Monday, Hobart was scheduled to host Calumet and Wheeler in a double-dual match. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans and heavy rains & wind caused a cancellation. The reschedule date is set for Friday, September 9th.
Tuesday, the Lady Brickies were back in NCC play with trip to Centennial Park Golf Course in Munster. Against the top team in the Northwest Crossroads Conference, our girls were not intimidated and showed consistency in their play! Unfortunately, the Lady 'Stangs were just too good on this night and won 168-256.
On Friday afternoon, Hobart was once again on the road in conference play ... this time over at Innsbrook Country Club in Merrillville to face Andrean. This one was originally scheduled for an earlier date, but due to course limitations, a postponement was necessary. At any rate, the Lady Bricks brought their sticks and played through - collectively improving on their team score from Tuesday! The '9ers were a little more comfortable on their "home turf" and defeated Hobart 206-253.
Dropping two NCC matches made for a tough week for our girls, but the consistency shown by the Lady Brickies and season-long improvement gives hope for a STRONG FINISH!
This is a BIG week for Hobart as our girls will be swinging the wrenches Tuesday over at Scherwood Golf Course in the Northwest Crossroads Conference CHAMPIONSHIP! For some inspiring words to get focused in on Tuesday's NCC meet, we turn to fictitious golf legend Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy - "I hit it again because that shot was a defining moment, and when a defining moment comes along, you define the moment... or the moment defines you." Define the moment ladies ... go get 'em!

Football
The 1-1 Panthers came in with a great game plan and were able to control the ball for a majority of the 1st half ... keeping the explosive Brickie offense off the field for most of the 24 minutes. Still, Hobart was able to put 7 points on the board in the 1st quarter and when senior back Trey Gibson broke free late in the 2nd quarter, our boys were able to take a 14-0 lead into the halftime locker room!
If the Panthers entertained any thoughts about calling it a "comeback" in the final two quarters, the Brickie D-D-D-DEFENSE quickly put those thoughts to rest with a DOMINANT performance that included a late TOUCHDOWN by senior Hunter Juris after he stripped the ball from the Griffith ballcarrier, scooped it up and raced 55 yards to paydirt!! Hobart had already managed two other 2nd half scores, so the Juris TD made the score 35-0 and started the running clock "mercy rule" for the remainder of the game! In fact, the Hobart D was so impressive, Griffith was held to a mere 6 1st downs for the game and 110 yds of offense! Juris led the way with 11 total tackles to go with his fumble recover and TD return. Classmate Noah Miller and junior Bradley Gibson each had 8 total tackles to help the cause!
On the offensive side of the ball, the Panthers got a heavy dose of Trey Gibson as the senior back rushed 20 times for 204 yards and 4 scores!! An impressive performance for him and the Brickie offensive line in front of the 1982 Class AAA State Runner-Up squad who was on hand for their induction into the Hobart Athletic Hall of Fame. WHAT A NIGHT TO BE A BRICKIE!!!
The Brickies are now 1-2, ranked #17 in the Class 4A AP Poll, and will travel to face the Culver Academy Eagles next Friday night! Two years ago, no fans were allowed to attend the Hobart-Culver contest due to COVID restrictions on the CMA campus. This time around should be a lot more fun if a strong Hobart contingent will travel to cheer our boys on to VICTORY!! WE ARE... HOBART!!

HHS Hall of Fame
On Friday night, the Hobart Athletic Department and Hall of Fame Committee shared the privilege of inducting another memorable group into the HHS Hall of Fame ... the 1982 Class 3A State Runner-up football team!
The Brickies of '82 celebrated the 40th anniversary of their memorable run to the state finals and received recognition during a special halftime ceremony at Friday's varsity football game against Griffith. Members of one of Hobart's all-time best were on hand to take part in the festivities and to watch the present-day Brickies earn a hard-fought victory over the Panthers in an entertaining high school football game!
It is always a special occasion when we get the opportunity to welcome back Hobart's very best. We are forever grateful for the contributions they have made to this school city and the impact they made on this town! THANK YOU to all who came out to honor these fine individuals!!
