Monday Memo

We Are Family - March 14, 2021

Dear Parents,

We also have Men IN Action coming to read to our classes on Thursday. Men IN Action is brought to us through Sheltering Wings. The goals of the Men IN Action are:

  1. Teach and prompt conversations with children about 4 important character values: support, positive identity, cultural competence and commitment to learning. This is in line with Sheltering Wings’ new focus on the prevention of domestic violence- utilizing the 40 Developmental Assets (www.search-institute.org).
  2. Engage men in a volunteer initiative. The hope is to expose men to the schools to encourage them to continue volunteering in the schools (or anywhere) with youth.
  3. Show our community we are a community that stands for healthy values and relationships. It is our desire to raise a new generation built on trust, honor and respect for one another. We believe men have a unique role in this preventative measure.

The volunteers will be reading the book “Marisol McDonald Doesn’t Match” by Monica Brown, and then they will then engage the students with a couple of questions pertaining to the character traits of support, positive identity and cultural competence. Once the time of interaction is over the reader

The Knights of Columbus, Council 11896, are offering a college scholarship for parishioners of Saint Susanna and Mary Queen of Peace (one per parish). Information regarding this scholarship is available at the bottom of this newsletter. Please feel free to share with any Saint Susanna senior who is going on to college or trade school in the fall.

God bless,

Spring Uniform Sale

"Are your kids growing like weeds? And have you started your spring cleaning? St Susanna is hosting a uniform sale on Wednesday, April 6th. Educational Apparel will be on site to sell new uniforms and we will host a used uniform sale as well!

If you are interested in consigning clothes that your kids have outgrown, we would gladly sell them! Our stock of used uniforms is running low, so we are accepting all gently used clothing.

If you just want to clean out those closets and donate the clothing, we will gladly sell them to raise much appreciated educational funds for St Susanna.

All clothing (both donations and consignment) must be at St Susanna by 8:00 am on Monday, April 4th. You may leave them in the vestibule.

To sell items:

  • Items should be freshly laundered.
  • Please tag your items with your name and price in order to receive payment.
  • If you cannot drop off items during set up, please contact Kandi Carson at kcarson@saintsusanna.com to arrange an early drop-off
  • If you would like unsold clothing returned, please make note of that at drop-off.
  • If you are selling uniforms, earnings MUST be picked up at7:30 pm on day of sale. Please mark each item with name and price, so we can track your earnings.

We also need volunteers to keep this sale running! If you can donate your time, please visit this Sign Up Genius:

Friday Book Buddies

Book buddies is a Saint Susanna tradition that has returned! Our older students are paired with younger grades, and once a week, often on Friday's, they meet for books and other activities. We are happy to be back together again after a long absence from this program.

IREAD and ILEARN Testing

As a state accredited elementary school, Saint Susanna participates in the required IREAD and ILEARN testing in the spring of each school year.

IREAD

IREAD is administered to third graders in Indiana to assess their reading skills. The test is made up of three sections and is administered via the computer over two or three school days. Our third graders will participate in this assessment on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings this week.

ILEARN

ILEARN is administered yearly to students in third through eighth grades. Every grade level is assessed in English Language Arts and mathematics. Fourth and sixth grades participate in a science assessment and fifth graders take a social studies assessment. Students will test several days for each subject area and testing is spread over a three week period. It is critically important that students are present each day. Please avoid scheduling appointments in the mornings during the test window.

ILEARN Testing Schedule

  • Testing sessions will be held daily from 8:45 AM to 10:00 AM.
  • April 19 - 21: Mathematics (3rd - 8th grades)
  • April 25 - 29: English Language Arts (3rd - 8th grades)
  • May 2 - 6: Science and Social Studies (4th - 6th grades)

Chess at Saint Susanna

A Note from Our CYO Chess Coach, Mrs. Bolin

I am actively looking for a Chess Coach to train and take over this Chess Club/Team in the future for me as my son Dane is aging out of CYO in 2 years and I want to make sure Chess lives on at St. Susanna!! I expressed this to my Chess families last year and no one was interested in completely taking it over for me as the Chess Coach, although I do have some volunteers who help at practices.

Here are the responsibilities of the Chess Club & Team Coach/Coordinator:

  1. Communicate with Chess Club/Team families.
  2. Schedule practices and reserve room space with Jackie Arnett. I've typically scheduled practices 4:00-5:15 pm on Saturdays for convenience before Saturday Mass. Practices have been once a month through Spring and Summer for 60-75 minutes. Weekly practices during the competitive season September-first week of November.
  3. Lead the Chess Team in CYO competitions on 5 Wednesdays October-Nov from 4:30-6:30 pm in different school gyms. One all-day tournament on the second Saturday of November in the CYO Center.
  4. Coordinate a Taco Bar for the All-day tournament on the second Saturday of November. Sign-up Genius has already been set up.
  5. Coordinate and staff a week-long Summer Chess Clinic that is led by Aaron Dean ( Learning Through Games ) each summer at the chess coach's convenience.
  6. Order Chess Club/Team t-shirts
  7. Recruit new Chess Club/Team players
  8. Become the keeper of St. Susanna's chess pieces and chess mats that are taken to each practice, every competition, and available for the Summer Chess Clinic.
  9. The Chess Coach does not have to be a Chess Master but does need to know how to play in order to teach new players how to move the pieces. Although I often refer parents and new players to ChessKid.com | Online Chess For Kids - 100% Safe and Free to learn how to play prior to their first practice so they can come to the first practice and start playing right away.

I am hopeful that a parent or teacher steps up to help lead this Chess Club/Team. It's such a great group!! If you know anyone who may be interested they may contact me!

Thank you,

Elena

School Counselor

I am happy to announce that Saint Susanna has a school counselor available for our students on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Ms. Katie Evans comes to us from Catholic Charities. She is a licensed clinical social worker / therapist. She will work with students on an individual basis, as needed. She will also teach whole class social-emotional lessons on topics such as being a good friend, bullying, and other age-appropriate topics. Ms. Evans presence in our school is made possible by utilizing a portion of our EANS grant from the federal government over the next two school years.

Students may be referred to Ms. Evans by teachers or the principal for a one-time visit. After that, parents must complete an consent form for continued visits. The consent form is available at the end of the Monday Memo or in the school office. You can reach Ms. Evans directly at kevans@saintsusanna.com

Easy Fund-Raising for Saint Susanna Catholic School!

Box Tops for Education

Here’s how it works:

  • Step 1: Download the new Box Tops App (iTunes or Google Play) – it’s free
  • Step 2: Create a username and connect it to your child’s school
  • Step 3: Scan your grocery store receipt. Items with the new Box Tops label will be automatically credited to your school

Does this mean I should stop sending in my paper Box Tops that I have already clipped? No! Continue to send those to the school!
