SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
The 2016-17 School Year in Review
Big Lake Elementary is a Title I funded school. This means we receive additional federal funds to support the education of our students. All families at Big Lake Elementary are benefiting from these extra funds. At the end of each year we like to look back and inform parents how these federal dollars are used to support your children.
This year we used part of our Title I budget to provide additional staff for our building. The Assistant Principal is funded through our Title I funds to provide positive behavioral support for school. Mr. Gardner works with many students throughout each day and supports teachers with student discipline and behavioral management. He also works in the administrative capacity with the entire staff to help with decisions and the overall workings of our school on a daily basis. This position has been a very positive addition to our building. Mr. Gardner has done great things with students, staff and families throughout the year.
This year all elementary school Instructional Coach positions in the Matanuska Susitna Borough School District were cut to half time. Title funds allowed our school to continue to have Mrs. Lovelace work as our Instructional Coach full time. She worked throughout the year with teachers and students to provide trainings and assistance with classroom instruction and interventions. She also oversaw the federal, state and district assessments (tests) that take place throughout the year. This data along with progress monitoring data was continuously reviewed to ensure that we were meeting the needs of the students in our school.
Another portion of our budget was used to fund interventionists to work with students throughout the day in the core subject areas. The half-time interventionist worked with small groups of students providing additional support as needed. These teachers worked with students daily and many improvements in student achievements were seen as a result of their assistance.
Along with personnel, the Title I funds were used to purchase licenses for students to use computer based programs as Accelerated Reader, Lexia Core 5, and Spelling City. These programs were a great compliment to our reading program as well as providing individualized interventions for students. Not only did we purchase computer licenses but we also purchased additional textbooks and other materials needed for the instruction of our core curriculum as well as interventions.
In order to ensure that the staff at Big Lake Elementary are prepared to provide the best educational experience for your child, we utilized Title I funds for some Professional Development for our teachers. These classes and conferences help teachers be better equipped to work with and engage students in the learning process. We have seen great things happening in the classrooms as a result of these opportunities.
Each year our families participate in a multitude of family involvement evening events. The supplies and dinners for these events are funded with Title I funds. They include such events as Science Night, Dr. Seuss Night, Camp Read-A-Lot, and Pastries for Parents. Staff members put in many hours working hard to organize and support these events. That is what makes them so enjoyable by all that attend. This year we saw many families, new and returning, attending and enjoying these quarterly events.
This year additional funds were used to purchase and install a new projector and screen in the gym to be utilized for assemblies, as well as other activities during the school day and after school. It was installed in April and has already been utilized on several occasions.
Overall, the Federal Title I funds that were allocated for our school were utilized to the maximum to provide for all students and families in our community. Students and staff in our building all benefited from these funds throughout the year. These funds along with district provided materials and funding is what makes Big Lake Elementary the best school in the valley. Summer vacation may be approaching but we are already preparing for the next school year. We look forward to working with all of you in the days to come.
