The Buccaneer Bulletin
Principal Newsletter - September 2, 2022
Buccaneer Families,
What an incredible Curriculum Night we had! It was wonderful having parents back in our building to meet their student's teachers. Thank you for taking the time to invest in getting to know our incredible HBMS staff this year. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
Reminders Regarding Arrival/Dismissal:
- We are consistently clearing the parking lot in 25 minutes! This is a celebration and faster than many other campuses. Thank you for working together to make this happen.
- Parking is not permitted along General Williamson. The fire department needs to have a way in and out in the occurrence of an emergency.
- Parking is not permitted in the parking lot of the LTISD cottage in front of our school. It is not safe for the students in that house for cars to be in the lot.
- Please be kind to the staff members working afternoon dismissal. They are working in the heat, rain, and past contract hours to ensure your student gets home safely.
With Curriculum Night behind us, we are looking forward to athletic events and an NJHS meeting next week. There are many positive activities happening around the Bend! I look forward to sharing highlighting all of the wondering things taking place as the year progresses.
I hope everyone has a great, long weekend full of something that brings you joy!
Sincerely,
Laura Keogh, Principal

A Note from Your HBMS Receptionist
Welcome back friends! I hope you all had a restful and wonderful summer break. I LOVE seeing all the new faces and welcoming back our 7th and 8th graders…they are all going to rock it this year! I wanted to share some helpful tips with you all as we get back into the rhythm of school.
If you are needing to speak with your student's grade level Counselor, Assistant Principal, or the Principal, you must schedule an appointment in advance. Please email them directly to set up a call or appointment. As you can imagine, they have meetings, duties and are supporting students throughout the day, so it is important to schedule in advance.

If you need to report a student's absence please email our attendance clerk, Carmen Cruz, as we only accept notice of absences in writing: cruzc@ltisdschools.org
You do not need to notify the front office in advance if you plan on picking your student up early from school. Just come to the main office with your ID, and we will be happy to check your student out anytime before 3:50pm. Additionally, please understand that when checking your student in or out, it could take anywhere from 5-10 minutes. ESPECIALLY on Holiday weekends. I am not permitted to call students into the office to wait for a parent to pick them up, so please take this into consideration when planning your day.
As we navigate through this year’s challenges with bus shortages, walking passes are available to those who reside within 2 miles of HBMS. Requests will only be processed if the address in Skyward is within the 2 mile radius of HBMS. Please note that walking pass requests could take up to 24 hours to process.
Thanks for the partnership,
Jenn Brennan, HBMS Receptionist
Discovery/Gifted & Talented Program
Attention LTISD Parents and Guardians,
The Discovery Program, otherwise known as Gifted and Talented, is now accepting parent referrals for GT Screening via this Google Form.
Transfer students, who were already identified as GT coming from their previous district, should submit their google form as soon as possible, as the transfer student screening will be set within 30 days of the first day of school. Parents should send proof of their child's selection/participation in the previous GT program directly to the campus GT coordinator.
Parents can submit referrals for screening up until the end of the first 9 weeks, by October 21, 2022. Students will be tested during the 2nd 9 weeks of instruction. If the referral and permission forms are not submitted by the deadline, the student will have to wait until the next year's screening opportunity, as the spring screening session is only for students moving in new to the district after the fall testing window is closed.
The forms and further information about the program can be found here.
Once the request is submitted through the google form, the campus GT coordinator will contact parents via email when the testing dates are set and share additional information. Please plan to attend the Secondary GT Parent Night (virtual event) on September 29 at 4:30 pm for an informative presentation about the program along with a Q&A session with your campus GT teacher.
You are also welcome to contact your campus GT coordinator directly, at any time, with questions. Please reference the contact information below:

Thank you,
Amanda Prehn, Director of Elementary Curriculum & Instruction/District GT Coordinator
