Hello Dragons!
It may be hard to believe, but Spring conferences are coming up in just a couple of weeks! This year our Spring Conferences will be March 17th from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and March 18th from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Just like our other conferences this year, we will be holding our conferences over Zoom or on the telephone. Distance learning has been challenging for us all and that makes it even more important that we have the chance to meet with you to make sure that all of our students can have a strong finish to the school year.
¡Hola Dragones!
Animal Guide of the Week:
-Laura Craford, RLA Social Worker
If you ever want your own card, message me (Laura) through teams or @ (740) 240-2311 and I will send you a picture of one, just like when you would come to my office for one when we were in school!
Zebra
This week at RLA we are ZEBRAS: “Let go of your fear and know that we are safe and protected at all times.” I have always felt like the zebra is one of my cards—I have a few that I pull that give me a sense of calm, the zebra is one of them. The zebra came to me at a time when I needed it, when I needed to know that I was safe, that I had support and that I truly would be okay. Oftentimes when we are faced with something new, it’s normal to feel nervous or fearful. Our minds create all sorts of stories about what can go wrong, and then we get stuck, fearful about moving ahead. However, much of what we call fear isn’t actually fear. True fear is an instinctual response to life-threatening situations. In those situations, our bodies will tell us and then our instincts kick in to tell us what to do. When the story in our head about trying something new or whatever it may be, don’t let it get the best of you. We need to let go and remember—we are safe, we have support, and we will be okay—we will come out the other side. Now that you have seen many of the cards in the deck here in the Fire, in Friday morning meeting, or in person—do you have cards that give you a sense of calm or that speak to you immediately? Mine are the zebra, the manatee, the panda, the humpback whale, and the Wolverine which we pulled last week!

Lines for Life
Add a little movement into your learning!
- Julie Mack, Wellness
In general, people learn better when information is presented in more than one way. We remember the learning better. Listen to your language arts podcast while you take a walk, for math make even numbers squats and odd number jumping jacks for an assignment, make up a song and dance to help you remember history. Use movement to boost your brain, increase your learning, and help you get off the couch.
Try some movement as you test your knowledge of Black History.

This Common 4-Word Phrase
May Be Making You Look Untrustworthy at Work
In the professional world, our words hold a lot of weight. This has only become truer in the increasingly digital workplace. As we see our colleagues less in real life and have fewer accidental run ins or casual interactions as a result, the words we choose when we do get together become more important.
And while taking others at face value and assuming positive intent is the best way to create long-lasting, trusting bonds with fellow employees, it's impossible to think everyone will give you the same grace. So, being choosy about the phrases you use to interact with your colleagues is a must — especially when certain phrases can compromise your professional reputation or perceived trustworthiness.
One such phrase: "If I'm being honest" or its sister "To be completely transparent."
These casual phrases have slipped their way into common language. They are often used to imply a new, different intimacy with the person you're speaking to or to communicate that something may not be a "typical" fact for the conversation but it's something that must be said.
While these messages seem positive on their face, their implications can have the opposite impact you may be going for. Suggesting you're only being honest now — after using the phrase — may cause the listener to wonder if you were being fully transparent before. In other words, if you're just now sharing your thoughts, how often are you hiding your perhaps impolite or "real" thoughts? This phrase can also come across as a bit fake. While it implies intimacy, the person across the room (or Zoom call) from you may not feel you are being completely honest or transparent — or that you don't have the proper relationship to do so.
So, what can be said instead? Usually, it is best to jump into the fact or opinion you're trying to present, especially if it may be different or "more real" than what the person is expecting to hear. You can ask if they have any questions or how they feel about the fact or opinion or offer up how you feel about it. This creates true exchange and honesty instead of putting on a facade of it, which is always a stronger approach.
