COUGAR COURIER
March 29th, 2019
From the desk of Principal Ruiz
Spring break begins on Monday, April 1st and concludes on Friday, April 5th. School resumes on Monday, April 8th. We encourage each family and scholar to enjoy their time away from school to rest and rejuvenate. We have 9 weeks of instruction planned for our Cougars when the break concludes. Come back prepared to continue learning!
This week our Lady Cougars played in the Championship basketball game. Although we did not bring a trophy home, we are proud of the Lady Cougars for being a winning team and representing us well, both on and off the court. Congratulations Lady Cougars!
Thank you to the MYP scholars that earned the opportunity to fill our stands at this week's basketball games. It was an amazing experience to see the stands at CIA and LaSalle filled with Red and Gold Cougar FANS! We are grateful for the transportation department for providing buses for our fans to attend the home and away games this week. We are blessed with an incredible South Bend team!
Be sure to check out the Great Day at CIA video performed by our very own Cougar Cast! You will not want to miss this way to "view" CIA. Click the link below...
Have a wonderful weekend - as always, it is a great day to be a Cougar!
Serving with scholars in mind,
Ms. Angela Ruiz, Ph.D. Candidate, Ed.S.

March Madness of Reading!
During the month of March, the 6th grade scholars started a book competition. It’s been an exciting and fun competition. We have been reading since the first of March. We started out with eighty books and now we are down to the FINAL FOUR! The final four books were read on Friday, March 29th. More details can be found about the winning books below...
By: Kaila Yohn, Ayanna Nicholson, and Adela Campa
Magnus at the Fire: Josh Cutts
The Pigeon finds a Hot Dog: Kyler Misiewicz
Holler Loudly: Cho’Zen Sims
Holler Loudly has a voice as big as the southwestern sky, and everywhere he goes, people tell him to "Hush!" From math class to the movies and even the state fair, Holler's LOUD voice just keeps getting him into trouble. But when a huge tornado comes twisting into town, Holler (with that voice of his!) saves the day.Readers will cheer for this rollicking story about celebrating our unique gifts, and Barry Gott's bright, fun illustrations will have you hollering for more.
Chicks and Salsa: Christopher Montano-Cardoso
What happens at Nuthatcher Farm when the chickens get tired of the same old chicken feed? The rooster hatches a plan! With a pinch of genius, a dash of resourcefulness, and a little pilfering from the farmer's garden, the chickens whip up a scrumptious snack of chips and salsa. When the rest of the barnyard gets a whiff of the spicy smells and want to join in, it can mean only one thing . . . FIESTA! But when the big day arrives, all their spicy southwestern supplies are gone! Could Mr. and Mrs. Nuthatcher have caught on to the flavor craze?
The Irish are coming!
In April, the University of Notre Dame's Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies and the UND Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures are hosting four education students from Mary Immaculate College (MIC), Limerick, Ireland. MIC is an amazing teaching college in Ireland, one of three producing teachers for all of Ireland.
We are excited to welcome these pre-service teachers to Clay International Academy for a day! Our sixth grade teachers are currently working with the Irish teachers to design learning experiences introducing our scholars to Irish culture.
We are thankful to the University of Notre Dame for supporting us in our journey to grow our global awareness at Clay!

ILEARN Assessment for 3rd - 8th Grade Scholars
Frequently asked questions:
Is ILEARN different from ISTEP+, or will it be the same test with a new name?
ILEARN is fundamentally different from ISTEP+. ILEARN is being developed to align to new blueprints and new item specifications. Educator committees will also recommend new proficiency levels and cut scores that will inform how student results are reported.
What standards will ILEARN measure?
ILEARN measures all Indiana Academic Standards, including content literacy and media literacy standards on the English/Language Arts assessments, process standards on the Mathematics assessments, and the new computer science standards on the Science assessment.
How will ILEARN be delivered?
ILEARN is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) for Mathematics and English/Language Arts. CATs individualize the test for students based on their responses to previous questions or sets of questions. This allows for a unique assessment experience for students at their level of mastery, resulting in more precise data outcomes. Science assessments will be an online fixed form assessment for Spring 2019, transitioning to computer adaptive as the item bank increases. Social Studies is an online fixed form assessment.

All Things Student Council (STCO) - Aspiring to Inspire
This summer one of my students, Kyler Misiewicz, has the opportunity to attend the NubAbility summer camp for other youth who are just like him. In order to help he and his family raise the needed funds to attend, Student Council (STCO) will be supporting Kyler and his family. We plan on holding a special “NUT” day in his honor, and each student who donates a $1.00 will receive a piece of candy. The family is quite excited and stated, “We hope C.I.A. can help us help kids missing limbs to," get out of the stands, off the bench, and into the game." We hope you will join us in supporting Kyler and his family!
