"In The Know" 11/8/16
A Message from the Leadership Team
As we approach testing week in mid November be on the look out for resources and strategies on preparing your students for the CASAS exam. Below are a few test taking resources to:
- familiarize students with CASAS items
- give students practice in taking a CASAS test
- help reduce student test-taking anxiety
CASAS Sample Questions for Reading:
Things to consider when reviewing and preparing for the reading practice test:
- Review the formate of the test
- Make note of all available text, such as titles, symbols and implied messages
- Identify what the question is asking
- Be ready of synonyms and antonyms that will make identifying the answer more challenging
CASAS Sample Questions for Listening:
Things to consider when reviewing and preparing for the listening test:
- Consists of three parts (Comprehension / Predict the next line / Identify the true statement)
- Remind and train students to be active listeners as dialogs and questions are only heard once creating a real world experience
- Help students understand the pattern of questioning for each of the three parts as students are asked to do different things
- Have students focus on the whole message and not only on one work or phrase
Community Education Teachers

COMMUNITY RESOURCES FROM BARBARA BELKOFF
Community organizations are a great place to find helpful resources, places that can help us with sometimes difficult situations. Community organizations depend on volunteers to help provide those resources. ONE of the very real ways to become part of a community is to become a volunteer within that community. You interact, speak and assist those living in your own backyard. Volunteering is a great way to practice our skills and also can be a great way to look for future employment.
So on a weekly basis I will share volunteer opportunities in Collier County.
ST. MATTHEWS HOUSE
St. Matthew’s House works to eliminate the elements of poverty at their base. Our homeless shelter and feeding ministry have opened their doors to countless lives without taking a day off in more than a quarter century.
Through our numerous programs, including the Justin’s Place Recovery Program, our ministry is able to initiate a second chance at life for many facing their toughest times. With established faith-based principles and dedication we’ve been able to see hundreds of individuals and families regain their independence.
