Happy 100th Day of School!

Local Heros

Thank you Trish Baughman for setting up a booth to represent Parsons at the Clean and Beautiful meeting at Mason ES.

Thank you to all of the teachers who donated items for Trish to display.

Cynthia Lewis for her planning and flexibility as we complete ACCESS testing in grades K-5.

All of our staff who braved the cold and rainy weather this week at the bus and car rider lanes and having students prepared for a very smooth dismissal today.

2016 - 2017 Preference Forms

It’s time to begin planning for the 2016-2017 school year. Please complete the Parsons ES Placement Preference Form, that has been placed in your mailbox and return the completed form to Keya Newman by Friday, February 5, 2016. Please use this as an opportunity to share your thoughts on any job you are interested in because you never know where the openings will be, what may come up over time and “what if” possibilities. This DOES NOT replace the transfer process. The GCPS placement preference forms (transfers) will be transmitted to certified staff via Lotus Notes at a later time. Teachers who have been at Parsons ES for 3 years or more are eligible to transfer to another GCPS school using this process. Classified staff wishing to transfer should speak to me after completing the Parsons placement preference form.

Fountas and Pinnell

Where we are: We started reviewing the process for conducting the Fountas and Pinnell Word test and the reading assessment. One of the most important reminders is to ensure that we are keeping the assessments standardized by following the scripts. This will help us obtain accurate reading levels across classrooms and grade levels.

While it is important to know the student's instructional and independent level, our true goal is to conduct guided reading lessons that meet the students where they are. With regular guided reading support it will prepare our students to read fluently and increase their ability to comprehend the text at high levels. We must be sure that students at all reading levels have this practice with fiction and nonfiction text.

Our Next Steps:

We will complete the reading assessment video and also take a look at creating guided reading groups, and how the book The Continuum for Literacy Learning can be a useful tool in supporting your guided reading instruction.

Resources are also on the Literacy Online Community Assessment > Elementary > F&P Assessment System > Resources

STEM Night

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to host a learning center or assist during STEM Night (previously Math/Science Night) on Thursday, February 4, 2016 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. There is still time to join in the fun. Please let me or your grade level AP know if you will be able to provide assistance and/or host a learning station that evening. We will need to know who will be presenting, the activity, location and any supplies you may need.

For all of those who participate they will earn a week long jean day pass and a beat the bus morning on Friday, February 5, 2016. Thank you so much for your support!
