- Japanese and Chinese characters stand for ideas and symbols represent sound.
- They had calligraphy which was the art of writing beautifully it was much admired.
-Every well educated person was expected to practice it.
- Peoples handwriting was considered to reveal much about his or her education, social standings, and character.
- They wrote poems, plays, etc. using calligraphy.
- They borrowed Chinas writing system but made it their own.
- They made symbols that stand for sounds like letters in our English alphabet.
