School District Highlight - Concord Community Schools
One strategy they have implemented is the use of a Community School Engagement Specialist (CSES). This individual works with families and students to identify needs, connect them to services and help navigate them through processes and systems. The CSES can provide mental health screenings using the MAYSI-2 or PSC and make referrals to community providers. They work with the student and family to try and help connect them to needed supports to improve student success in all areas. The Community School Engagement Specialist worked with school staff this past school year to find a space and create a Sensory Room right at the school. This therapeutic space has a variety of equipment that provides an opportunity for students to calm and focus themselves in order to be better prepared for learning. They have developed a system that allows students to access this room when needed.
Concord staff have participated in multiple professional learning opportunities around youth mental health and trauma. The CSES along with school staff are currently trying to get on-site mental health services provided more regularly at the school from local community providers. The staff and administrators at Concord Community Schools are committed to doing all they can to meet the needs of their students and families.

Gearing Up For School: Attendance Matters!
The start of the 2018-2019 school year is right around the corner and ensuring the right message about attendance is being conveyed to families, students, and the community is so important. Having attendance messaging at your building helps build a habit and culture of attendance by helping everyone understand why going to school everyday matters and what everyone can do to ensure students are in school. The attendance works website provides a ton of great handouts and messaging tools as well as plenty of research and toolkits all available for free to utilize in your buildings!
Here is an online tool that you can use as a visual to show how missing school affects a student's chances of graduating on time!
