Hope to see you there!
HEALTHY FUTURES
September had wonderful weather for activity. Many students were able to still go outside and enjoy some fun. In fact, over 30 students turned in September Activity Logs! They have earned a small prize and a ticket for the drawing of even bigger prizes available for only Big Lake Elementary participants. The more participants our school has, gives us more opportunities to earn BIG prizes for our school. One year we earned a visit from the Eskimo Ninja, Nick Hansen from the Healthy Futures program. We would love to win something like that again.
October activity logs have been sent home and a copy has been attached to this newsletter. Let’s get active and join the 30+ Big Lake Elementary students in the 2019-20 Healthy Futures Challenge.

LICE
There have been cases of head lice reported in your child’s school. Head lice can happen to anyone. It is not a sign of poor health habits or being dirty. Please check your child at home for head lice, even if your child is lice free at this time please recheck throughout the month.
- Nits (lice eggs) are tiny, white, pearly eggs that attach themselves to the hair shaft close to the scalp. They do not flick off or move like dry skin. Live lice are small black bugs. If you have any questions on how to perform a lice check please contact the nurse 907-892-9705.
- Step 1 If you find eggs try and detect where your child encountered the lice. Report to the nurse your child's name and teacher.
- Even though they do not jump or fly, they can spread from one student to another by sharing combs, brushes, clothing, hats and in bedding.
- Step 2 There are many lice treatment shampoos on the market as well as other mechanical and manual methods of controlling the lice. All lice shampoos are not created equal. Medicated lice shampoo is the only approved method to kill lice. One treatment is not enough. Please follow the directions on the medicated shampoo you purchase to prevent re-infestation.
- Step 3 Bed linens and clothing including hats, coats, etc must be washed the same day as the first shampoo. Items that can not be laundered can be placed in a plastic trash bag and stored for 2 weeks in the garage.
- Combs and hairbrushes, etc. must be boiled and/or cleaned in hot soapy water and left to soak overnight. Ponytail holders, bows, barrettes should be bagged for 2 weeks. Vacuum out drawers where items area kept.
- Step 4 Daily inspection of your child’s head after treatment is important for 2-3 weeks following treatment. All household members and other close contacts should be checked and treated at same time.
