UN Councils
We Need You! We have 26 UN Councils at Wiley! We want to learn from your experiences in these countries. Please contact Chris Hahner at chahner@wcpss.net if you would like to connect with one of our UN Councils.
Monday Clubs
Each month we will highlight a new club. We'll start with Makerspace Club taught by Ms. Christiansen and Ms. Hahner. A Makerspace is all about mindset and has little to do with the physical space. Students will bring the global competencies to life through a series of challenges.
In K-2, students read Jan Brett's The Three Little Dassies. This is an African version of The Three Little Pigs. Dassies, or rock rats, live in the Namib desert. A giant eagle is trying to turn the dassies into lunch. Students were tasked with building two different styles of homes to protect the dassies from the eagle. During week two, we tested the strength of their structures with a hair dryer to represent the eagle's rapid speed and large wing span. Students learned about the Think, Make, Improve model and practiced flexibility and perseverance. We had some proud architects and engineers!
Students in 3-5 spent some time discovering makerspaces. They brainstormed ideas and created lists of possible materials. They built their ideal makerspace during week 1 and took on the role of kid inventors during week 2! We had everything from bed extenders for tall siblings to food machines to conquer world hunger!
Computer Science Education Week: Hour of Code
Volunteers Wanted: Computer Science Education Week builds awareness and connections. As global thinkers we want to continue learning more throughout the year! We are always looking for parents to share their experiences with technology and computer science in their career fields both domestically and internationally. Please email Chris Hahner at chahner@wcpss.net if you would be willing to serve as a guest speaker later this year!
