A Message from Principal Nixon--Week of April 13, 2020
Dear Northwoods Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break and took the opportunity to rest and relax! Our teachers are ready to launch their Remote Learning lessons tomorrow and are eager to begin connecting with students on a daily basis. By now your child's teacher should have communicated information about his/her daily schedule and information about accessing their Google Classroom site. If you have not received any information, please email your child's teacher immediately.
As we prepare for the Remote Learning launch tomorrow, I'd like to ask everyone to exercise patience and flexibility, both with your children and with our teachers and staff. This is going to be a learning process for everyone involved and our goal is to support students and families while providing a high degree of flexibility. Road bumps (loss of internet connectivity, computer issues, website crashes, etc.) are going to happen. It's important to know that there are no rigid due dates with assignments and that all lessons, videos, and resources will be permanently available for students to revisit as much as they want/need throughout the shutdown.
Beyond that, we wish you continued health and safety! Please take a few minutes to read through the information below.
Important News and Information
Spirit Week
Next week, April 20th -24th, we will hold a virtual Spirit Week. Please see the flyer below for details.
Prepare for Remote Learning
All families are encouraged to follow the steps below to ensure that each child has the best remote learning experience possible.
- Create a space for learning with the least amount of distractions possible.
- Familiarize yourself with your child’s learning schedule provided by your school.
- If you have challenges at home, share those with your child’s teacher.
- If you have access to the Internet and a computer, make sure you know the virtual platform your child’s teacher will use. Most will use Google Classroom and/or Seesaw.
Playground Update
Due to local and state directives, all school facilities including all playground and athletic fields are closed. For the safety of our community, we ask that your family please adhere to the guidelines. The district is in the process of placing signage on all playground structures and fields.
UNC-TV Partnership:
UNC-TV and the NC Department of Public Instruction are partnering to support school-age children learning at home by providing free, curriculum-informed, over-the-air content that is widely accessible to students—especially those with limited or no internet access.
Each weekday, two blocks of programs on UNC-TV's North Carolina Channel will serve students: fourth through eighth grade, from 8 AM-1 PM, and ninth through twelfth grade, from 1-6 PM (actual times may vary, please check the weekly schedule online here).

PTA UPDATE:
As you may expect, any PTA-sponsored activities that were planned to take place at school have been canceled or are on hold for the foreseeable future. All PTA planning meetings will be "virtual" for as long as school is remote and stay at home orders are in place. The PTA Board is planning to meet next via conference/online call on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at 6:30pm. This will be a quick meeting to address budget items and expenditures for the remainder of the school year. If you would like to "attend" the call and are not currently a PTA Board Member, please contact: northwoodspta.pres@gmail.com
The PTA Nominations Committee is still looking for many volunteers to fill roles and positions for PTA programs for next school year, but we will not be able to "elect" the executive positions/make them official until an in-person General PTA Meeting can be held. Stay tuned for more info as we have it, and please contact northwoodsnominations@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering in any way for the 2020-2021 school year!
Thank you all for your continued support of our school community, and we can't wait until we can see you again!
