Adult and Community Education

A Message from the Leadership Team
Adult Education
Our class attendance, these first few weeks, is an improvement over the end of last semester. We attribute that to everyone working together to meet the needs of our students: from asking the right questions at registration; presenting a friendly caring environment; to the most critical component of student attendance - relevant instruction. If the instruction is meaningful, relevant and engaging, students will attend regularly and most importantly they will learn.
Update: Golden Gate Learning Center (GGLC) is currently open! GGLC still has limited space available for our level 1-3 students. ESOL Classes run Monday – Friday; 8:30 am – 11:30 am. If you know of a potential student, please have them call Rosmeri for registration information and availability. Students may also visit the site and speak directly with Diana Kerskie.
The Palmetto Ridge High School Marching Band was recently selected to play at the Inauguration Parade in Washington, D.C. Brenda Claro (Palmetto Ridge Adult Ed Support Staff) is not only an advocate for Adult Education, she is actively involved in volunteering with the Palmetto Ridge Marching Band. Brenda helped raise money for the band’s trip and she chaperoned the event (see pictures below). Congratulations Brenda!
Reminder: Rosmeri will be out of the office from Jan. 27 - Feb. 6. Please assist us with substitution needs by first working with your coordinator for planned absences and by giving us as much notice as you can for those unplanned illnesses. While Rosmeri is out please email Bruce rutilb@collierschools.com and Ariel pechokar@collierschools.com for sub needs.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) - Back to the Basics in Language Arts and Mathematics Workshop
This is a great opportunity for GED and ESOL instructors both to better understand the Florida’s Curriculum Framework for Adult Basic Education and develop strategies for integrating the standards into the classroom. These standards provide adult education instructors with a scope and sequence of major skills that students need in order to be successful in the workplace and real-world situations, as well as transitioning to the next academic level.
Join the IPDAE team as they focus on selected components of reading, writing, and mathematics. Learn about research-based strategies and activities that will assist you in teaching initial close reading skills in your ABE classroom. Within the writing area of this workshop, you will be introduced to strategies that will assist your students in moving from sentences to paragraphs and in the beginning development of evidence-based writing.
