The Work: Pieta'

*Commissioned in 1495 and completed in 1500.

* Published in books and decoys in museums. the original can be found in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Rome, Italy.

* Pieta': a sculptor of Jesus and Mary. Grieving Mary is holding Jesus' limp body and appears to be very heartbroken.

*I find this piece very intriguing because the sculpture is very detailed and has a very humanistic quality. I can tell from all the precise details that Michelangelo was very passionate and put a lot of feeling into this sculpture. The realism is unbelievable to me.

*The significance of this piece was to portray Michelangelo's grief towards the death of Jesus. After analyzing this piece it is clear religion played a big part in Michelangelo life and he knows what its like to feel empathy toward another person.

*Humanism: Michelangelo displays Mary's individual reaction to the death of her beloved son, Jesus.

* Capitalism: Like most other sculptures, Pieta' was ordered to be made by the Medici family which shows the value of patronage in Renaissance times.
