A grateful heart...
My heart is grateful for....
...Meagan Sanders, who had some concerns about an idea I shared with her, but kept thinking about it and working with her team to come up with an approach they could make happen. Thanks to Karen and Brittany for also being willing to try new things!
....Donna Waters who participated in a parent conference this week that was uncomfortable. Donna handled herself with grace and poise and concern for the student, in spite of the situation.
...Karen, for welcoming a migrant from another second grade classroom at my request to try and address some behavior concerns. That's hard to do with only 6 weeks of school to go, and I appreciate her willingness to embrace the new arrival.
...Mary Spencer Huber, for her willingness to come when we have emergencies. Mary serves at least 3 or 4 campuses, and everyone of them has potential behaviors on any given day. When we have something happening here that requires some additional expertise, Mary is just a call away. We appreciate her expertise and her great attitude!
....the whole 4th grade team for giving up part of their lunch one day this week to problem solve with us.
Safety concerns
Here are some things you can do to help reinforce our safety:
1) Talk to your students (especially 3-5 graders) about never opening the door for someone, even if it's someone they know. A couple of weeks ago, Jeanette observed a student leave the cafeteria and open the door for a parent because it was someone they knew. She talked with the student, but if one will do it, more of them might be tempted to as well. Please reinforce with them that opening the door is an adult job, and not something we ever want them to do.
2) If you see parents holding the door for other parents, please remind them to individually check in. That is our first (and probably best) line of defense. If we aren't comfortable with someone checking in, we can deny entrance or stall until police can be summoned.
3) PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, make sure students aren't propping open exit doors. We are still finding that from time to time. Our best guess is that students do that when they're at the end of the line and the teacher taking them out doesn't know it's happening, but it leaves us very vulnerable.
