App Review
Teaching Money provides children with a useful way of reinforcing their understanding of money. Within the app they can practice recognising notes and coins and will learn how to pay for objects and give the correct amount of change.
Teaching Money allows users to choose between three different currencies – the US Dollar, the Australian Dollar and the British Pound. There is a teaching module and five task based modules. These are Sorting Coins and Notes, Piggy Bank, Toy Store, Giving Change and Show Me.
The Teacher Tool is basically a blank screen with the coins and notes at the side. It can be used to discuss a variety of money scenarios and teachers can use the pencil tool to write on screen just as they would a whiteboard.
Sorting Coins and Notes gets children to arrange money of different values from a middle plate to the correctly labelled plate. The sounds effects used here are very realistic with each coin making a characteristic din as it is moved. If the child chooses an incorrect plate, the coin or note will begin to wobble once all the coins and notes have been placed. This allows the child the opportunity to correct their answer before being told they are wrong. There are three levels within this module - coins, notes and coins and notes.
Piggy Bank can be used as an aide to addition problems. As the user puts notes and coins into the piggy bank they are able to see the money add up. Double clicking the pig or shake the iPad will result in the money being tipped back out.
In the Toy Store module children are tasked with buying more than one toy for the amount given. There are nine different levels to choose from. Level one deals in amounts up to ten dollars while level nine can include values up to $250.
Dealing with change is something that many people, not just children struggle with, so Giving Change is a very useful module. It requires users to put coins into an on screen hand for the change they would receive from the given amount. Level one deals with values up to ten dollars, while level five includes vales up to $20 with a note and coin change.
Show Me is another very useful module. It asks users to show two different ways of making a value e.g. five dollars. Children do this by placing coins and notes onto two separate plates. Level one asks for values up to one dollar, while level five includes values up to twenty dollars.
Teaching Money does not contain any adverts or in app purchases and is well worth the asking price.
