Classroom Management

Hello! I hope your family enjoyed a wonderful Holiday Break. I did! I slept a lot and appreciated time with family! I was very proud of many students who participated in the Holiday Break Homework Challenge. Going over and beyond to keep the learning going makes me a very happy teacher!

Many students are leaving their boots overnight at Hornung. This is ok with me, I just don't want them to be without them at home if they need them to play outside. Please have a discussion with your child and make sure he or she clearly understands what items he should be bringing back and forth to school every day, and maybe which items can be left at school during the school week. Thank you.

PTO is having a Family Fun Night on January 29th. See the Stinging News for more details about this event. Mrs. G's classroom is going to donate a "Terrific Technology Basket" to the silent auction. I am collecting cash donations and other items with a sign up genius. Please look for this email and contribute whatever you can. All raised money goes to PTO which provides us with books, supplies, technology, assemblies, field trips and more!

Writing Workshop

Our personal narratives have taken forever to finish! All students are at the publishing stage though. You can see your child's final draft in their google drive. They can log into google drive with their email and password located in the front cover of their agenda. We will be working on our personal essays starting Monday next week.

Reading Workshop

We have had a lot of fun with reading workshop this week. We have been introduced to the mystery genre and have formed book clubs with our peers. Students have read the first section of their books and have had one club meeting. They've named their club and have come up with rules and expectations for members to follow. We have watched a Scooby Doo episode to help us identify the ingredients that make a great mystery.

Word Work

Students worked on Unit 12 in spelling. We studied compound words again. We also reviewed using dialogue and how to place quotation marks and punctuation into sentences where someone is talking. Students took a snapshot through Edmodo to show their knowledge and made sure that their published personal narratives have correct dialogue punctuation as well.

Math

We started Unit 5 this week. We have been working hard on comparing place value and practicing greater than and less than concepts. Students also had the opportunity to create and make their own pictographs using given data. Soon students will work with numbers in the millions and learn about decimals. Social Studies & Science

We are almost done with our Michigan Google Slides about Native Americans. FInishing this assessment has taken longer than expected! We started our Force and Motion unit this week and learned a little bit about gravity. Students will continue stations that allow them to read, play games, perform experiments and watch videos about this topic next week. You can check out some links on my website science page to see what we are using in class.
