The Consequences of Love

Theme: Love can cause many conflicts and problems.

In A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare, love causes many fights and conflicts, tragedy, jealousy, and drama for Helena. Shakespeare shows this through the dramatic fights between Helena and Hermia, and the sorrow-filled conversations between Helena and Demetrius. Helena is extremely jealous of Hermia's looks, which is clearly shown through the terrible insults and laments of Helena. Also, Helena is caused great pain by the insults and threats Demetrius says to her. Helena is so in love with Demetrius that she would consider it an honor to be killed by him. Love causes people to do crazy things.
Taylor Swift - You Belong With Me

Track One: "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift

Helena would listen to this song in the first half of the play, when she is thinking about Demetrius (which is 24/7!) and wishing that he loved her, and not Hermia. Helena would definitely direct this song to Demetrius, who hates her and is instead completely in love with Hermia. This song shows the pain and longing that love can cause, and also how love can cause you to start comparing yourself to someone else and make you think that you aren't as good as that person.
Bruno Mars - Grenade [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

Track Two: "Grenade" by Bruno Mars

In the beginning of the play, Helena is so in love with Demetrius that no matter what insults and threats Demetrius says to her, she still follows him around and loves him. She would sing this song to Demitrius, who is the center of her world. Some of the lyrics in the song are "catch a grenade for you, throw my hand on a blade for you, I'd jump in front of a train for you", which Helena would definitely be able to relate to, since she would do anything for Demetrius.
Cassadee Pope - Wasting All These Tears

Track Three: "Wasting All These Tears" by Cassadee Pope

Helena would listen to this at the beginning of the play when she is thinking about how Demetrius left her and stopped loving her for Hermia. She would direct this towards Demetrius to show him her feelings about him just leaving her behind. This song shows how love can cause so much heartbreak and make you feel worthless and dumb.
P!nk - Don't Let Me Get Me

Track Four: "Don't Let Me Get Me" by Pink

Helena would listen to this in the beginning of the play, when she is extremely jealous of Hermia because of her looks, and wants to be her. Helena would direct this toward Demetrius, who is the only person who she wants to please, and Hermia, who she really wants to be. She wishes that she could be Hermia and be as pretty as her, so that she can please Demetrius and make him love her. This song is about not liking yourself and wanting to be someone else, who is supposedly more perfect than you. This can be caused by love.
Adele - Chasing Pavements

Track Six: "Chasing Pavements" by Adele

Helena would listen to this in the beginning of the play, when she feels weak and wants to just forget about it and give up. She would direct this toward Demetrius, who causes her so much sorrow and makes her, at times, want to just give up on love. This song shows all the pain and dilemmas love can cause, and how loving someone who doesn't love you can sometimes make you just want to give up and forget about it, and also sometimes make you want to keep trying, "even of it leads nowhere".
Orianthi - According To You

Track Five: "According to You" by Orianthi

Helena would listen to this song in the beginning of the play when Demetrius is hates her and is insulting her. She would direct this toward Demetrius, who's opinion is the only one she cares about. Even though everyone else in Athens thinks she is pretty, he doesn't, just like in the song. This shows that love is what causes her to only care about Demetrius' opinion, and to think his opinion is all that matters.
Taylor Swift - Teardrops On My Guitar

Track Seven: "Teardrops on My Guitar" by Taylor Swift

Helena would listen to this basically the whole play, except for at the very end when Demetrius falls in love with her because of the potion, and she would direct this towards Demetrius, who is the "Drew" in this song. She would relate to this song when Demetrius is talking about how much he loves Hermia, and this song shows her that love can cause a lot of drama, and tragedy, sadness, and heartbreak.
Adele - Someone Like You

Track Eight: "Someone Like You" by Adele

Helena would listen to this song when she just wants to give up and rest. She would direct this song towards Demetrius, who causes her a lot of pain and sorrow, which she thinks is still worth it. But sometimes, she just wants to give up from her chase and just rest. The song shows someone giving up on a person who she really loved ("Never mind, I'll find someone like you"), and wishing him "nothing but the best".
Tori Amos - 1000 Oceans

Track Nine: "1000 Oceans" by Tory Amos

Helena would listen to this when she is determined to keep following Demetrius. She would direct this toward Demetrius, who causes her so much heartbreak and sorrow, but who she would do anything for, and definitely cry "1000 oceans" for. This song shows what love can make someone do for the person they love, and it can make someone follow the person they love anywhere, even "through the solar field".
Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe

Track Ten: "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepson

Helena would listen to this when she was completely in love with Demetrius (which is almost the whole play). She would direct this towards Demetrius. Even though she knows he will never love her, she can't get him out of her mind and keeps on chasing him like in the song ("But now you're in my way"). This song shows Helena that love is making Demetrius get in her way and causing a lot of problems for her.
