The Life of an Arthropod
Katherine Yin-PaPBio-Guzman-7
Objective
Students will learn the external features of arthropods.
Interesting facts
- Arthropods have been on earth since about 428 million years ago.
- They are among the oldest known animals to have lived on land, and they comprise over 90% of the animal kingdom.
- All arthropods have a thick exoskeleton, which protects the body and retains water.
- The Arthropods' exoskeleton is made of a compound known as Chitin, which is present in the form or plates with joints in
- Arthropods have an open circulatory system.
Scientific Name
Astacoidea is the scientific name for a crayfish, which is an arthropod.
Predator
- Racoons
- Toads
- Snakes
- Birds
Habitat
The habitat of arthropods include the flatwoods and the local pastures. Arthropods habitat also include lakes and bay heads. Seasonal ponds are another habitat.
Skeletal system
Skeletal systems are on the outside of the body and are known as exoskeletons, which are made of chitin, which is responsible for making the shells hard. The shells of crustaceans provide more than just a shield of protection for these two groups of marine life. The shell also provides support for the muscles and joints so it can move about freely. The insect outer skeleton, the cuticle, is made up of two layers, the epicuticle and the procuticle. This is built from numerous layers of fibrous chitin and proteins.
TAXONOMY
Phylum arthropoda
EVOLUTION
All arthropods have a commen ancestor, and today we have an enormous variety of arthropods. The first arthropod started on land, but soon branched out into many different types of arthropods who live in various places, such as the crayfish who lives in water.
HUMAN IMPACT
Humans are predators to many arthropods, and help with balancing the population.
