The colonists lived in the new land but the King of Great Britain forced the colonists to pay taxes and did not allow them to help make laws.
They said this was "UNFAIR!"
They decided in 1775 to DECLARE their Independence and say "NO MORE ENGLAND!"
The American Revolution began in 1775 because the colonists wanted to rule themselves and thought Great Britain was UNFAIR.

Our Constitution
**WE NEEDED A GOVERNMENT**
After the American Revolution when we were FREE FROM Great Britain, we needed laws and a government.
In 1787, a group of men met to write the Constitution. They did not like the way the country was going. They fixed it by creating the Constitution. We call these men The Framers.
The law is the set of rules that we live by. The Constitution belongs to the United States. It belongs to all Americans.

George Washington was a Framer. So was Ben Franklin.

The Constitution says how the government works. It formed the THREE branches of our Government.
It creates the Presidency.
It creates the Congress.

Bill Becomes a Law
First you Think about a PROBLEM!!!
Come up with a solution called a BILL!
The LEGISTLATIVE branch WRITES it down, TALKS about it, and VOTES!
They give it to the President, the EXECUTIVE branch.
The President signs it YES... it's a LAW, or VETOS it NO, it goes back to the Legislative Branch!
The JUDICIAL branch JUDGES the law!.
