What is Twitter?

Twitter is an online social networking and microblogging service that enables users to send and read "tweets", which are text messages limited to 140 characters. Registered users can read and post tweets but unregistered users can only read them. Wikipedia

What is a tweet?

(verb) The act of posting a message on Twitter.

(noun) A message posted via Twitter containing 140 characters or fewer.


What is a hashtag (#)?

  • -People use the hashtag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily in Twitter Search.
  • -Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets marked with that keyword.

  • What does it mean to "follow" someone:

    To follow someone on Twitter is to subscribe to their Tweets or updates on the site.


    What is a "handle":

    A user's "Twitter handle" is the username they have selected and the accompanying URL.
