Second Grade is Phanatic About Reading
We are excited to announce that Second Grade is participating in the Philadelphia Phillies, Phanatic About Reading Program. Your child's teacher will be logging the students minutes read in school each day.
We will be logging the students minutes in hopes that the Phanatic will visit our school!
Math
In Everyday Math, the students will learn about the turn-around rule for addition and subtraction. Students will also explore addition tools, odd and even patterns, and shapes. On Thursday students will practice using doubles facts (equal addends).
As a reminder, students should complete their nightly Home Links. There is an answer key at the start of each unit.
Reading
In Reader's Workshop, we are practicing specific skills and strategies to improve our fluency and comprehension. This week the students will learn to decode words quickly by looking at chunks of the word they already know at the beginning, middle, and end.
Please help us in reinforcing these strategies at home while you are reading with your child.
Science
We will continue our science mini-unit about vertebrates and invertebrates. Second graders will spend the week focusing on arachnids as an invertebrate.
Writing
In Writer’s Workshop, we will continue writing our small moment pieces. This week students will learn how to write in powerful ways by emulating authors of great books. Students will revise their writing and choosing strong phrases for added effect.
Word Study
A Word Study test will be given on Friday. Please sign and return all tests after reviewing them with your child.

Make A Difference Day
Our Un-Fundraiser Is Underway
In response to parent feedback requesting fewer fundraising events throughout the year, the PTA is currently sponsoring an “un-fundraiser”. To date, we have received approximately $5,000. It is important to note this is in comparison to our annual Wildcat Walk which typically brought in an average of $25,000 a year as a single event.
Please consider donating and sharing with family and friends. Doing so will assist the PTA to reach their $30,000 goal in order to continue offering family togetherness events, ongoing playground improvement efforts, monetary contributions to offset field trip expenses, student t-shirts, assemblies, and more! Many, many thanks in advance! Visit our PTA website for more information.
