Message from Principal Timmons

Wednesday, April 1, 2020

Dear Liberty Community -

As you heard from the Superintendent yesterday, the message from ODE made a pretty significant shift in our expected work with students from “supplemental, non-graded” learning to “Distance Learning for All” that will count towards credits and support students towards diploma requirements. I am pleased that the Liberty staff was already preparing for online learning and connecting to students. We will look for more details coming from ODE about diploma requirements for the Class of 2020.

To review the plan for Liberty students.

  • Today, Wednesday, April 1, students began accessing and working on their grade-level supplementary learning packets (https://bit.ly/hsddistancelearning) or on specific work from teachers.

  • Between Wednesday, April 1, and Friday, April 10, teachers will continue to contact students and families to check-in, see how they’re doing, what their needs are in terms of technology and other resources, and, in general, continue to develop established relationships with students.

  • Please note that teachers will be reaching out through technology tools like Google Hangouts Meet, which may appear on your phone as an unidentified number; a number from another state, such as New York; or as the tool itself, such as Hangouts Meet.

  • If you have set up a spam call blocker that declines all unidentified numbers, you could be blocking calls from your teacher or school. Please change this setting on your phone so you can receive these important calls.

  • Between Monday, April 6, and Friday, April 10, teachers will be posting lessons to their Google Classroom sites. These lessons are intended to prepare students for the new learning they will begin receiving on Monday, April 13.

  • On Monday, April 13, Distance Learning for All begins.

On Friday, 4/3, we will have our third round of technology distribution of Chromebooks to students. The distribution will be a drive up model utilizing our visitor parking lot from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. We realize that many students still do not have internet access and that HSD is working to procure Wifi Hotspots for student use. Because the number of Hotspots are limited, HSD is establishing a set of priorities for distribution. There are a number of public Wifi services that have opened up in the meantime: wifi.xfinity.com reports to have free access to the public.

In Liberty’s motto, “OUR School OUR Team!” the “R” stands for “Responsibility” which we define as “Being aware of yourself and others while making choices that positively impact your future.” As we head into the Distance Learning model, responsibility plays a whole new and important role in success. Without the regular face to face connection for teachers and students, it will be hard for students to stay motivated. I want to encourage students to take responsibility for yourself and those around you to positively impact your future!

Liberty Proud!
