Message from the Principal

Dear Liberty Community -

Wow! It is so good to see some spring weather and all the activities and sports that are just getting underway with competitions!

I would ask families to do a couple of things as we head into our last week of school before Spring Break. First, check in on their school work and make sure they are caught before the break. Second, check in on your child’s forecasting status and make sure they have submitted their form. If you have questions please reach out to your child’s grade level or AVID counselor for support!

Liberty has multiple job openings for Special Education Assistants, a Security Monitor and Custodian. If you or anyone you know is interested in working at Liberty or in HSD as a regular employee or substitute, please check out the job listings on our website or on the website of our substitute services provider, ESS.

Thank you all for your continued support and partnership in working to serve our students!

Liberty Proud!

Greg Timmons

Estimada Comunidad de Liberty-

¡Vaya!

Full: On Monday, Mar. 13 Liberty High School seniors Maxx Weber and Thalia Thomas, junior Jason Kruger, and teacher and coach Melissa Buechler traveled to Salem to compete in Oregon’s ProStart Championships - the Oregon Hospitality Foundation’s event showcasing the industry’s future chefs and managers.

Due to COVID, this is the first time the competition has been held in three years. And because of staffing changes, Liberty hadn’t competed for many years. But that all changed this year when the Liberty team began preparing for the event in late January.

The culinary challenge was to prepare a three-course gourmet meal with only two butane burners in under an hour. Weber and Thomas did the cooking, while Kruger served as team manager and time-keeper. Their menu included an appetizer of Rockfish Ceviche with Fresh Tortilla Chips; a main dish of Chipotle Steelhead with Cilantro-Lime Couscous and Sauteed Chayote Squash; and a dessert of Mascarpone Mousse in a Dark Chocolate Shell, Toasted Chili Crunch & Cara Cara Oranges.

Liberty’s was the smallest team of any group competing, and unfortunately did not place in the competition. However, two chef judges said the team’s dessert was their favorite, and one chef asked for their Steelhead marinade recipe!

Buechler, who started as Liberty’s culinary teacher midway through last year, expressed that she couldn’t be prouder of the effort and endurance her students showed. “We went in on a lark not expecting much,” she explained, “and came out much stronger than we imagined. Both Maxx and Thalia are looking forward to continuing with culinary school after graduation. They competed against the best in Oregon, and came out smiling. I’m looking forward to Jason’s experience leading the team next year. It was amazing for me, as their teacher, to watch them grow as future chefs and as young adults.”
