A Message from Mrs. Caudill
Next week is teacher appreciation week. I could not be more appreciative of the teachers and staff at Amerman. I cannot thank them enough for what they have done over the course of this year and especially these last six weeks. Thank you for “weathering the storm.” Thank you for all the work they are doing behind the scenes to be there for our students and families. Thank you for going an extra trillion miles. Mostly, I just thank them for being who they are - amazing.
Stay Home. Stay Safe. Stay Hopeful.
Devon Caudill

BEST PRACTICES FOR READING WITH YOUR CHILD
These tips are best suited for our earliest readers, KDG-2nd grade. One of the greatest gifts we can give children in the habit of being a life-long reader. It may take years to build this habit and that’s ok. Many of our families already have daily routines for reading together or setting aside time to read to self. When reading with your child and listening to your child, there are best practices for how to grow and empower a young reader’s skills and confidence.
Take a few moments to view this video to help you better understand these tips and help your child grow as a reader. (The video is about 5 minutes long.)
- Be Present
- Don’t Tell the Word
- Move Beyond Sound it Out (remind your child about our Reading Strategies)
- Reread for Fluency - smooth it out
- Don’t Correct Every Mistake
- It’s ok to Reread a Book Multiple Times.
Remember that we all learn best when we feel safe and secure, these daily reading routines should be a time not just for your child to grow as a reader, but also to connect with you, the story or the content and to build memories.

Leader in Me Parent Survey
As a Leader in Me Lighthouse school we are always working to understand how we can improve. Please complete the survey below as part of an annual assessment to help all members of the school community (students, parents, and the adults who work at the school) understand how we're doing. Your responses will provide us with important information to help us become even better. All of your responses are completely anonymous. The survey should take you approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Please try to respond to all items. Thank you!

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week
The Amerman PTA is planning a virtual way to show their love for the Amerman staff. Please see below for some awesome ways you and your child care spread the love too! As you can see on Monday, the Amerman Staff will receive a special surprise. The PTA has decided to donate $900 to the Amerman staff lounge! The money will be used to purchase two new microwaves and a new storage/shelving unit. We cannot thank the Amerman PTA enough for their support!

An Invitation to Northville's "Virtual" STEAM Fair
For the safety of our school community, the 6th Annual Northville STEAM Fair was cancelled for this year. However, upon learning that many students had continued their projects, a "virtual" fair was created. Amerman had a number of students enter into the virtual STEAM fair. Their projects are outstanding!
Please go to http://www.northvillesteamfair.com/ to see the 20 projects that were submitted via video or presentation. They will also be featured on Northville Public School and the Northville Educational Foundation's Facebook Page. Please share so that our students can be showcased in our Northville Schools Community. Thank you to all who participated!

Dragon Rider, by Cornelia Funke
This week Mrs. Caudill started reading a new book. The book is Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke. Ms. Funke has written several books our upper elementary students may be familiar with including Inkheart and The Thief Lord. The book appeals to all ages, from early elementary to adult. It is a story about friendship, adventure and the true meaning of home.
The story is about Firedrake, Ben and their furry friend, Sorrel, who are in search of the mythical place where dragons can live in peace forever. Together, they embark on a journey that takes them to magical lands where they meet marvelous creatures - and one ruthless villain. Along the way, they discover allies in odd places, courage they didn't know they had, and a hidden destiny that changes everything.
This book a quite a bit longer than the last read aloud. As a result, the recorded readings are longer as well.

May's Focus: Integrity! Habit 8: Find your Voice!
Every month Amerman Focuses on a new theme and Leader in Me Habit of the Month. The focus for the month of April is Integrity and our Habit of the Month is Habit 8: Find Your Voice. Just because we are not at school doesn't mean we can't practice our Leader in Me Habits and our theme of the month.
Find your voice means finding something that you are good at and like doing. You are proud, but do not boast. Instead, you use your expertise to help and inspire others.
