Principal Message
What a great start to the school year! It was so great to see so many faces, both new to our school and returning, at our Back to School BBQ. We love this event and feel it is a great way to get to know our families.
We are excited to be working with you this year to create a positive and supportive learning environment for all of our scholars. We believe that a strong partnership between home and school is essential for student success.
Here at Shady Cove School, we are committed to providing our scholars with a rigorous and engaging academic program, that also consists of Art for all scholars and STEAM for 3rd-8th grade). We want our scholars to develop the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in school and in life.
We encourage you to stay involved in your child's education. Please feel free to contact your child's teacher or the school office if you have any questions or concerns. We are here to support you and your child in any way we can.
We look forward to working with you in a partnership to ensure the success of our scholars.

OCTOBER CHARACTER TRAIT- RESPONSIBILITY
This month we are talking about Responsibility. One way to define Responsibility is “taking action and understanding the impact of our choices.” Taking action can mean doing the right thing or completing the tasks you have been assigned. Understanding the impact of our choices means that our actions matter. Positive and responsible actions can help people and irresponsible actions can hurt others.
Responsibility is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Strong.
Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like focusing, organizing, and goal-setting.
Here are some conversation starters you could use at home that support the teaching and learning about "Responsibility".
- Can you share or show what it means to be Responsible?
- What are strategies you can use to help you focus and practice being Responsible? (examples may be: Taking a deep breath and re-focus, ignore distractions, ask questions if you need help)
- Can you describe how to use organization to help you be more Responsible?
- When working organizing your time, tasks, and things (The 3T’s) how do you practice Responsibility?
Gum
Please know that for all other grade levels chewing gum is now considered a defiant behavior and they will receive a referral. All classes have been shared the new expectation. They will all have a chance to earn this privilege back by following the current no gum rule. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Updates on the Development to the YMCA Elk Trail Outdoor School.
The YMCA is officially launching a capital campaign to support the transformation of the school into a community asset again. The entire project has been broken into five phases, the first phase includes completing curb appeal efforts and getting the cafeteria on-line so groups can cook and eat at the school again. To learn more Click Here.
Last year the YMCA was able to purchase the property next to the school and they have renovated the house to include two bunk rooms, and a rental cabin space. (See the photos below.) Through donations, projects and a grant, the YMCA will be completing a full restoration of the school's cupola (bell tower). This will include a full replacement, re-flashing & sealing the roof, a new copper roof, and restoration of the weathervane & lightening rod.
The YMCA will be hosting a FREE Fall Family Festival at the school on October 21, 2023 from 11am-4pm, please stop by, information will be displayed and they will be talking about the future of Elk Trail. (See the flyer below.)
If you are interested in supporting the YMCA's Capital Campaign to support the future of Elk Trail Outdoor School, the YMCA will be hosting the YMCA’s Party With Purpose on November 4, 2023. If you are interested in this event please register for the event by clicking here.
The following event is not sponsored by our school or district but we do not want our community to miss out.

IPAD INSURANCE
iPad insurance is $25 per student. It may be paid through ParentVue or by sending a check or cash to school with your scholar. We highly recommend this insurance. You never know when an accident is going to happen. If you have not paid the insurance then you will be responsible for the cost to repair or replace the iPad.
IPad insurance is an annual fee. If you had insurance for the 2022-23 school year it was effective until September 5, 2023. During the 2023-2024 school year, EPSD9 will continue to offer optional iPad insurance to students and families. The annual insurance will be effective from September 5, 2022-September 3, 2023. The cost for the insurance is $25.00. Without insurance, students will be responsible for all repair or replacement costs. If your student did not have iPad insurance for the 2022-23 school year, students will need to bring their iPad to the office to verify the condition of the iPad prior to acceptance of your insurance payment. Please click on this link for more information on iPad Insurance.
