Monday Msg - Happy New Year Edition

Big image
Welcome back! I hope the holiday break treated you well, and you're returning to work rested, relaxed, and ready to tackle 2016. I had a great time celebrating with family for Christmas. Of course no one will be surprised when I tell you that it was an eating-centric holiday filled with various delectable finger-foods on Christmas Eve and an amazing meal of homemade pasta whipped up by my wife, Amy, and my father-in-law on Christmas Day. Meanwhile, you'd be amazed how quickly flour spreads through your house! The eating continued as we train-ed it to Washington, D.C. for New Year's with dear friends who we haven't see in over a year. There was lots of laughter, sandwiches (of the Vietnamese type- amazing), and sightseeing. No matter how many times I visit D.C., I'm never disappointed. I could see the Washington Monument 1000 times, and it would still be breathtaking on the 1001st. We tried to drop in on Mr. and Mrs. Obama for brunch, but they were sadly out of eggs. Time flies when you're always anticipating your next meal!

Back here in reality, It's hard to believe that we're almost at the end of the first semester. As usual, I've been doing some reflecting, and like last year I've jumped on the #oneword bandwagon. I wrote a blog post on the topic that I hope you'll check out. We've got some great things in store for the second half of this school year, and I can't wait to dive in with all of you. Happy New Year!

Thanks to Noreen Brown for sharing this powerful video from Albany City Schools with me over the break. It really is a simple yet moving example of how much baggage some of our students come to us with, and how important it is for us to help them unpack that baggage so they can get on to the important task of working toward their dreams. Relationships matter!
