Boone Meadow Flyer
Summer Update Edition From Boone Meadow Elementary School
From the Eagles' Nest:
Dear Boone Meadow Families –
The summer days are flying by, and with that, preparations for the new school year are well underway.
In addition, as we draw near to the start of school, here are a few items to keep in mind:
- Office will reopen to the public on July 30th. Office staff is working to prepare for the upcoming school year, and you are always welcome to call if needed.
- New Family Night – Monday Evening, July 30th. (5:45-6:30) If you are new to Boone Meadow, did not attend Kindergarten Round-up, and/or haven’t been in the building, please mark your calendar on Monday evening, July 30th for an orientation to Boone Meadow. This is for newly enrolled families. We will meet in the cafeteria at 5:45 for a brief information session.
- August 2nd & 3rd - All teachers return to work and will be engaged in professional development across the district both days. On Monday, August 6th, they will be working in their classrooms and meeting with colleagues in order to plan and prepare for the start of school.
- Class assignment notification - In the afternoon of August 3rd, families should receive an email from ZCS notifying families of their elementary child's classroom placement for the upcoming school year.
- Open House/Meet and Greet – On Monday evening, August 6th, (5:00-6:30) the school is open for all families in order to reconnect with classmates and visit your classroom. During this time, students can drop off school supplies, say hello to their teacher, and get those last few questions answered. We conclude the evening at 6:30 in order to be well-prepared and well-rested for our first day of school on Wednesday, August 8th.
- NEW STAFF - I am pleased to introduce some of our new staff in this edition of our "Friday Flyer." Truly, we have added some great talent to our team. We've included brief bios below.
Enjoy your weekend!
Sincerely,
Tom Hundley, Principal
Welcome to the Boone Meadow Family
Kim Gray - Literacy Coach
Hello BME Families,
My name is Kim Gray and I’m thrilled to be joining the Boone Meadow Family as a Literacy Coach this year.
I was born and raised in California. I attended California State University, Fresno and began my teaching career there. My family and I moved to Indiana a few years ago and I’ve been happily teaching at Pleasant View Elementary across town. This will be my 20th year in education. I’ve taught in both elementary and middle school settings and been a Kindergarten-6th Grade Literacy Coach. I enjoy reading and writing and can’t wait to learn alongside you all!
My family and I love our new home in Indiana. We enjoy traveling around our Hoosier state seeing the sights and experiencing all the fun. Our son, Ryan, will attend Purdue University and our daughter, Megan, will be a junior at ZCHS. We have an energetic and super cute puppy, Indiana, who keeps us plenty busy.
I look forward to meeting you in the coming weeks, getting to know the fabulous students who will fill our school with smiles, and getting to work with the amazing staff!
Happy Reading,
Kim Gray
Sarah Schermerhorn -Fourth Grade
Hello! My name is Sarah Schermerhorn and I am so excited to be joining the staff at Boone Meadow Elementary!
I grew up in Indianapolis and was raised by two fine educators. I remember visiting my mom’s elementary classroom and then playing school with all my stuffed animals when we would get home. :) It took me a couple of years in college to realize teaching was my passion, but after my first elementary education class, I knew this profession was definitely for me! I love teaching and learning. I graduated from Indiana University with my Bachelors in Elementary Education. Since then, I have taught 5 years in MSD of Pike Township and 4 years in Hamilton Southeastern Schools.
Most recently, I took some time off from teaching to be a stay at home mom to our two children: Claire, 5, and Jackson, 2.5. I am so thankful for that time at home with my children, but I am eager for this new season here at Boone Meadow Elementary.
My husband, Josh, and I love spending time with our family and friends. We love going on family walks, swimming at the pool, cooking dinners, and watching movies together.
I greatly look forward to meeting each of you,
Sarah
Nick Burch - Third Grade
Hello Boone Meadow Families!
My name is Nick Burch and I am beyond honored to join the amazing Boone Meadow community! I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri where my love for sports truly began. The majority of my childhood was spent playing baseball, soccer, or football. I love the teamwork aspect to sports and that idea of team members working towards a common goal is a cornerstone to my classroom. I then attended college at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln where I studied Elementary Education and got to be a part of a great NCAA tradition: Nebraska Cornhuskers football.
Before coming to Indiana, I taught fifth grade for four years in Lincoln, Nebraska. My wife, Patricia, just completed her Doctorate of Pharmacy at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Both my wife and I love to travel and be out in nature. Our family mission is to attend every National Park. Two down, only fifty-six more to go! I also enjoy reading, writing, trying new restaurants, and watching movies with my wife.
I am excited to grow and learn with everyone at Boone Meadow. I look forward to meeting you soon!
Nick

Volunteers and Visitor Background Checks
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS
We value partnerships with our families and welcome parents and guardians to serve as volunteers in our schools. Each ZCS building offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.
Examples include:
- Field Trip Chaperones
- Out of Town/Overnight Chaperones
- Tutors
- Volunteer Coaches
- Classroom Helpers (PTO parties/room parents)
- Library Helpers
- After Prom Workers
- Field Day/Jog-A-Thon Volunteers
- Book Fair Sales/Athletic Ticket Sales
During the school day, all volunteers are expected to sign in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer opportunity, all volunteers must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days prior to the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee* for the full background check which will expire after 5 years. The link to apply for the full background check can be accessed on the Volunteers/BRAVO link on the ZCS main webpage. For more information, contact the Volunteer/BRAVO Coordinator.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS
During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times.
Examples Include:
- Lunch Guests
- Classroom Guest Speakers
- Classroom Special Events (Grandparent Day/Famous Hoosiers/etc.)
- Parent/Teacher Conferences
We ask that all visitors schedule an appointment to meet with teachers, counselors, administrators and all other staff members so that we may best serve everyone. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.
*ZCS thanks all volunteers for generous support of our youth and schools. Thank you, too, for supporting assurance of student and staff safety by completing and paying for a volunteer background check.
