Hawks Happenings

October 2021

Happy Fall!

Apples, pumpkins, leaves and flannel! It's Fall, Y'all!

I hope that you had a wonderful weekend and great start to the month of October! We have a lot going on at the school right now but first, I want to share some amazing information about our school from last school year.

Our staff, students and parents worked very hard last year during Virtual Learning and the many school schedule/teacher assignment changes we faced throughout the school year. We have learned that while our EOG (End of Grade) testing proficiency levels were lower than normal for us last year, we were ranked first among other Buncombe County elementary schools according to SchoolDigger.com! This website ranked WvES 183 out of 1,471 elementary schools in NC based on our percentage of students who were proficiency on the End of Grade assessments in reading and math. I am super proud of our students and staff for everything they did last year to accomplish this major feat in the midst of a pandemic. I am also very appreciative to parents, guardians, grandparents and others who worked alongside the school to accomplish great things. Together we can do anything!

Weaverville Schools PTO Black Hawks Fun Run News!

Wow! Thank you all so much for your support of our Weaverville Schools PTO Black Hawks Fun Run! This Friday is the day of our Fun Run Event. All students will recieve a Fun Run shirt due to the generous donations of our Fun Run sponsors! Students will be given their shirt on Friday morning. Please make sure that your child wears tennis shoes to school on Friday.

This year we have had to alter a few of the logistics with the Fun Run to better align with COVID safety procedures. Read the steps below that have been taken:

  • WvES students will walk to WPS on the sidewalk with their masks on. Masks will be worn during opening ceremonies.
  • Three tracks will be set up on the WPS field.
  • Two classes will be assigned to one track
  • One class will stand or sit on the perimeter (with masks on) and cheer the other class on while they run and then the classes will switch.
  • Students may choose to wear a mask or not wear a mask while running.
  • Students are not allowed to cluster up or hold hands with friends while they run.
  • Water breaks will be provided for students.
  • We are not marking laps on the back of student t-shirts this year. Instead teachers will have a chart to keep track of the laps. This will ensure that we don't cluster students up each lap as they wait to be marked off.
  • Teachers will have disposable masks available to give your child prior to walking up to WPS in case your child is afraid he/she will lose the mask from home.
  • Teachers will have disposable masks available for each child after they run in case their mask has been lost.
  • Students will wear their masks as they walk back down to WvES from the WPS campus.

Parents are welcome to join us for the Fun Run festivities! We ask that parents wear masks since we are unable to maintain 6 foot of spacing during this event.

Looking for Volunteers!

Are you available to help?

In the past we have loved utilizing support from parent and community volunteers. We hope that we can start using this resource again to support our students and staff members!

Our School Counselors from WvES and WPS (Jayme Benfield and Nicole Olenick) are working on scheduling a Volunteer Training for parents/community members who are interested in coming in to help students with academics and/or complete clerical tasks. This training will also include COVID safety protocols so it is required for all volunteers.

Our classroom teachers are also in need of volunteers who are willing to help supervise half the class while they eat lunch in their classrooms so the teacher can have a much needed break. This year due to having to keep students 6 feet apart while they eat, our teachers have to supervise their own students every other day and some have chosen to supervise their own students each day. It would be wonderful if volunteers could help in this area.

Please be on the lookout for information about volunteer training if you can cover any of these needs.

The first step to volunteering is to complete the application found here: https://www.buncombeschools.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=92531&pageId=254488 Lunch supervisors are Level 2 volunteers and require a background check.

We had 39 entries for the Yearbook Cover Contest. Students and staff will be voting soon! Thank you to everyone who participated. The entries look amazing! Check them out at the end of this newsletter!

New Reading Curriculum

This year all students in grades K-6 have a new reading Curriculum called Wit & Wisdom. Here is a link to Family Tip Sheets that provide a list of the text and resources that students will be using during their Module studies. https://greatminds.org/resources/products/group/wit-wisdom-family-tip-sheets

Please note that this program is very rigorous and expects full participation from your child. While the texts are rigorous, the teacher provides supports to help all learners access the information in a meaningful manner. We look forward to seeing how our students will grow in their Literacy understanding by following this robust program.

Supporting Eblen Charities

We will begin our Eblen Pumpkin Drive on October 20th. Thanks to Mrs. English for helping coordinate our school drive. We will sell paper pumpkins for $1 and hang throughout the school. With that purchase, students may participate in a special spirit dress day.

Staff will have the opportunity to purchase 'blue jean' passes during the month of October so don't be surprised if you see a lot of jeans!

Wednesday, Oct 20 - Wacky Hair Day (how crazy can you get?)

Thursday, Oct 21 - Hats Off for Eblen Hat Day (wear a hat to school day)

Friday, Oct 22 - Red and Black School Spirit Day (GOOOO, Blackhawks!)

Safety Reminder

Several parents have complained about cars entering the car rider line via Main Street so that is why I was out on Friday supervising this area and why I sent out a phone message on Friday afternoon.

Since Weaverville Police Department has been short-handed lately, we have not had police supervising the car line. Please, please, please follow this procedure. We are all adults and we know better than to 'cut line'. The last thing that I want to be involved with is a road rage incident on our school campus and we came close to that last week.

Thank you in advance for following the established car rider procedures that were instituted by Weaverville Police Department to keep everyone safe.
