E-LEARNING DAYS
These are challenging times and we'll work together to do the best we can do to provide for the needs of our students and families. Thanks for your understanding.
PLEASE USE THE ATTENDANCE LINE TO REPORT ANY STUDENT ILLNESSES THIS WEEK
Even though we are in an eLearning situation, we still need all families to call our attendance line if a child is sick. For attendance calls, please use the attendance line at 815-337-862 and report your child's symptoms (Fever above 100, cough, shortness of breath, chest congestion, headache, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, eye irritation, etc.) We would also like to know if you have a doctor diagnosis or if you have had any recent travels.
We are closely monitoring illness trends and will continue to report our data to the McHenry County Department of Health for students on a weekly basis as per our standard protocol.

HELP YOUR CHILD INCREASE SKILLS FOR READING COMPREHENSION
You can help your child increase reading comprehension by applying these strategies when reading together or talking about reading. Sometimes students struggle with the complex thinking or sustained attention required to keep up with all of the important details and to access information that is implied but not directly stated. Parents and teachers can help student learn to use these strategies:
- Discussing or activating prior knowledge (What do you already know about the topic?)
- Developing questions while reading (Stop - Ask yourself what is happening and why.)
- Connecting what you are reading to another text, something you have seen or experienced
- Visualizing or picturing what you are reading
- Making predictions about what will come next in the text
- Looking back for keywords and rereading in order to clarify or answer questions
- Reflect on what you read - Does it make sense?
Students can learn and then use the strategies that work best for them depending on the text they’re reading. Pulling deeper meaning out of text through the use of thinking strategies can be beneficial not just to reading comprehension but also to writing.
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE - FUN WITH IDIOMS
Challenge your child to explain these idioms:
- He got cold feet.
- That's the last straw.
- It's raining cats and dogs.
- Think outside the box.
- Cry your eyes out.
- Burn the midnight oil.
- Lend me an ear.
- That's a piece of cake!
EMAIL FROM DR. MOAN TO FAMILIES 3/13/2020
D 200 Schools to be Closed March 16 -27
District 200 schools will be closed to students beginning Monday, March 16 due to health concerns for our students, families and staff. We are following Center for Disease Control recommendations on limiting the gathering of large groups. Schools will remain closed all of next week and during our scheduled spring break from March 23 to March 27.
In addition to student health concerns, we are concerned about the possibility of our students transmitting the COVID-19 virus to other vulnerable groups including the elderly. We are aware of the difficulties many of our families will face without children able to attend school, but it is our responsibility to do our part to mitigate the pandemic by halting the gathering of more than 6,300 students and hundreds of staff members every day.
We will remain in communication with our families during this time and communicate updates directly and via our website about any decision to reopen schools and other pertinent information. During the closure, students and staff will continue school through our eLearning plan starting Monday, March 16. We realize that eLearning can never replace the value of student/teacher classroom learning, but an abundance of caution is needed to protect our students, staff and the greater community.
- Each school has a plan for students to have instruction and the opportunity to ask questions and receive feedback from our teachers.
- We will not have eLearning during our scheduled spring break.
- We are asking parents to still report student health issues on the school attendance line.
- Students should have classwork or skill work for at least 5 hours a day during our eLearning.
- School buildings will be closed and all after school sports and activities will be canceled until we resume school.
- Our free and reduced lunch students will be provided information on options for meals during our closure.
- Principals will be available to parents and students via District 200 email during our eLearning instruction.
- The District 200 office will remain open and staff members will be available to answer questions and concerns from parents and students.
Please feel free to contact our District 200 office with questions or concerns.
Please complete this form to positively recognize an Olson staff member! We'll share these with staff:
